Engine Room Of Ship

1.What is engine room?

2.What does it contains?

3.Where it is located?

4.What is the use of

it?
As a name itself suggest engine room is a space of a
ship where all machinery is located

 It contains nearly 5 major diesel generated sets

Each set produces power (4160 volts) and also
capable of providing (2100 kilo watts ) of power
 Ac generator sets
 Auxiliary equipment
like cooling pump
Fuel oil pumps
Inert gas plant
Fresh water
generator
Incinerator
Engine room extends right from the
bottom most level to the level of funnel
The main marine diesel engine
drive’s the propeller located at
the bottom
 Some of the engine room located at

a) Aft of the ship

b) Forward of the ship

c) Mid ship section

Most of the ships have its engine room in the aft part
of the ship
Generally ships like Dredgers will
have engine room at the forward of the
ship
 Disadvantages:-

. Transmission losses
. Addition of weight of the shaft
. Hold space losses
. Increase in the cost of the shaft
. Required power to rotate shaft
 Generally ships like bulk carrier, oil tankers etc..,
has their engine room in the aft part of the ship

 Advantages:-

. Less transmission losses

.No additional weight of the shaft
. Larger cargo space can be provided
. Installation of the shaft is easier
compared to the forward and midship
position

precautions to be taken in engine
room
 Most dangerous space in the ship was engine
room
As engine room is noisy, ear protections (ear plugs )
be worn should
 As engine room is dark, we should
wear a over head light
 Due to high temperatures prescribed
suits should be used
