WHAT IS AIDS?
Infectious disease, caused by the
human immunodeficiency virus,
which is transmitted sexually,
through blood or from the mother
to the fetus, and which lowers the
body's natural defenses until it
completely disappears.
HIV causes AIDS and also interferes with the
body's ability to fight infection.
The virus can be spread through contact with
infected blood, semen, or vaginal fluids.
Within a few weeks of HIV infection, symptoms
such as fever, sore throat, and fatigue may
appear. Then the disease is usually asymptomatic
until it becomes AIDS. Symptoms include weight
loss, fever or night sweats, recurrent infections,
and fatigue.
There is no cure for AIDS, but strict adherence to
antiretroviral therapy can significantly slow the
progress of the disease and prevent secondary
infections and complications.
PREVENT AIDS There are now more tools than
ever to prevent HIV. You can
use strategies like abstinence
(not having sex), never sharing
needles, and using condoms
the right way every time you
have sex. You may also be able
to take advantage of HIV
prevention medications, such
as pre-exposure prophylaxis
(PrEP) and post-exposure
prophylaxis (PEP). If you have
HIV, there are many steps you
can take to prevent passing it
on to others.
