A PRESENTATION BY GROUP 1
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
BY THE END OF THE DISCUSSION, THE AUDIENCE WILL BE ABLE TO;

GAIN KNOWLEDGE ON WHAT HIV, AIDS AND STI IS

KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH IT

KNOW HOW TO PREVENT AND TREAT THE DISEASE

BE AWARE OF THE DOH PROGRAMS FOR HIV, AIDS AND STI

END HIV/ AIDS AND STI STIGMA

HIV/AIDS AND STI
WHAT IS IT?
H — HUMAN
(Human to Human)

I — IMMUNODEFICIENCY
(Weakened Immune System)

V — VIRUS
Infectious agents (pathogens) that
can infect you and make you sick.
HIV
(HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS)

HIV is a retrovirus that infects cells of the human

immune system (mainly CD4-positive T-cells and
macrophages—key components of the cellular immune
system) and destroys or impairs their function. Infection
with this virus results in the progressive depletion of the
immune system, leading to immunodeficiency.
STAGES OF HIV

01 STAGE 1: ACUTE HIV INFECTION

Viral load very high in the blood
Many people have flu-like symptoms.

STAGE 2: CHRONIC HIV INFECTION

02 Also called the asymptomatic HIV Infection or clinical latency.
lower viral load but virus is still active

03 AIDS (ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY

SYNDROME)
A — ACQUIRED
Obtained/Developed

I — IMMUNO D
DEFICIENCY
(Weakened Immune System)

S — SYNDROME
A condition characterized by a set
of associated symptoms
AIDS
(ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME)
Last and most severe stage of HIV Infection. Extremely
high viral load and can easily be transmited to others.
People with AIDS have a badly damaged immune system
and can get an increasing number of opportunistic
infections. Without medication, people with AIDS may
typically survive about three years.
CAUSES OF
HIV/AIDS
HIV is caused by a virus. It can spread through:

Unprotected Illicit injection drug use from mother to child during

pregnancy, childbirth or
sexual contact or sharing needles breastfeeding
CAUSES OF
HIV/AIDS
HIV is caused by a virus. It can spread through:

Blood Accidental needle

transfusions puncture
SIGN &
SYMPTOMS

• Fever • Swollen lymph

• Headache nodes
• Rash • Weight loss
• Sore throat • Diarrhea
• Cough
S — SEXUALLY

T — TRANSMITTED

I — INFECTION
STI
(SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS)
Infections you can get by having sex with
someone who has an infection. These
infections can affect both men and women
and can lead to various health
complications if left untreated.
C
A STIs are caused by various
S bacteria, viruses, and
U O parasites, and they are
T
S F primarily transmitted through
I sexual contact, including
E vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
S
TYPES OF STI
THE MOST COMMON TYPES ARE:

CHLAMYDIA GENITAL HERPES GENITAL WARTS GONORRHEA

SYPHILIS HPV TRICHOMONIASIS

SIGN & SYMPTOMS
FOR WOMEN: FOR MEN:
• Abdominal pain • Pelvic pain
• Pain during sex • Burning sensation or pain
• Vaginal bleeding when peeing
• Rash or an itchy feeling • Testicle pain
• Pelvic pain • Blister or ulcers on the
• Unusual vaginal discharge genital area
• Pain or burning sensation • Needing to pee more
when you pee frequently
• Blister or ulcer on genital • Discharge coming out of
area the penis
TREATMENT & PREVENTION
For HIV
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
is a medicine taken to prevent getting HIV. PrEP is
highly effective for preventing HIV when taken as
prescribed.

Prevention
- PrEP is less effective when not taken as prescribed. Since PrEP only
protects against HIV, condom use is still important for the protection
against other STDs. Condom use is also important to help prevent HIV if
PrEP is not taken as prescribed.
For HIV/AIDS
Antiretroviral therapy (ART)
This approach has the best chance of lowering the amount of
HIV in the blood. There are many ART options that combine
multiple HIV medications into one pill, taken once daily.

Prevention
- Practice safe sex
- Always use sterile needles
- Avoid sharing razors
- Watch out for blood stained needles and metals
For STI
Antibiotics
Antibiotics, often in a single dose, can cure many STIs caused by
bacteria or parasites, such as gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia and
trichomoniasis.
Anti-viral drugs
herpes or HIV, your doctor may prescribe medicine that keeps a
viral infection from getting worse, called an antiviral medicine.

Anti-viral drugs
- Talk to your partners about sexual histories
- Get tested along with your partners
-Use condom

OVERVIEW

According to the World Health Organization

(WHO), nearly a million people currently acquire
STIs which includes the Human Immunodeficiency
Virus (HIV) globally. The presence in a person of
other STIs greatly increases the risk of acquiring
or transmitting HIV. It is initially seen among
what we call key populations which include Males
who have Sex with Males (MSM), Transgender
(TG), People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) and
Freelance Sex Workers (FSW).

VISION/MISSION AND OBJECTIVES
VISION

01 to achieve ZERO new infections, ZERO

discrimination, and ZERO AIDS-related death.

MISSION
02 to improve access and utilization of preventive
primary health care services for HIV and STI,

OBJECTIVES/GOAL
03 to reverse the trend of HIV epidemic by reducing the
estimated annual infections to less than 7,000 cases
by 2022.
