NAME OF THE
DISCOVERY/INVENTIONS
• HIGGS BOSON
SCIENTIST/TEAM/ ORGANISATION
BEHIND IT
• The Higgs boson was proposed in 1964 by Peter Higgs, François
Englert, and four other theorists to explain why certain particles have
mass.
BRIEF IDEA ABOUT THE
DISCOVERY/INVENTIONS
• The Higgs boson is the fundamental particle
associated with the Higgs field, a field that gives mass
to other fundamental particles such as electrons and
quarks. A particle's mass determines how much it
resists changing its speed or position when it
encounters a force. Not all fundamental particles have
mass.
APPLICATION IN REAL LIFE
• In addition to discovering the Higgs, making these
detailed measurements of these properties enabled us to
compare theory with experiment, and to ask ourselves
how successful the Standard Model was in predicting
how the Higgs would behave. As of 2019 and the full
suite of data that has been collected and analyzed by the
CMS and ATLAS collaborations, everything we've seen
is 100% consistent with the Higgs boson having the
exact properties predicted theoretically.
ROLE IN SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
• On the surface, it may seem that the Higgs boson
does not affect everyday life. Not directly,
anyway: it is a short-lived particle that does not
make up the matter we are made of and interact
with, and can only be observed in the extreme
conditions created in particle accelerators.
