CPRI Compression Introduction
Definition
Complying with CPRI protocols, CPRI ports transmit control-plane and user-plane data between a BBU and an RRU/AAU. The user-
plane data consumes a large amount of CPRI bandwidth resources in each cell.
This feature compresses the I/Q bit width and lowers the sampling rate to reduce the CPRI bandwidth resources required by CPRI
data transmission.
Benefits
CPRI compression reduces the investment on gNodeBs, fiber optic cables, and optical modules. This reduces the deployment and
maintenance costs of network operators.
The following table lists the I/Q bandwidth required in a 1T1R 5G cell and that required in a 64T64R 5G cell when 3.2:1 CPRI
compression is enabled.
40 MHz 60 MHz 80 MHz 100 MHz
1T1R 0.605 Gbit/s 0.9075 Gbit/s 1.21Gbit/s 1.5126 Gbit/s
64T64R 38.7213 Gbit/s 58.082 Gbit/s 77.4426 Gbit/s 96.8033 Gbit/s
When to Use
To determine whether to enable CPRI compression, calculate the following bandwidths: (1) CPRI payload bandwidth over an optical
port (2) I/Q data bandwidth required when CPRI compression is disabled. If bandwidth 2 is less than bandwidth 1, CPRI
compression needs to be enabled. If bandwidth 1 is greater than or equal to bandwidth 2, CPRI compression is not required.
Enable 3.2:1 CPRI compression in Massive MIMO 64T64R cells.
Enable 2:1 CPRI compression in FDD 4T4R cells only if the bandwidth is insufficient.
