MEANING OF CONFLICT

 Conflict can be defined as a state of disharmony between persons for


ideas, interests or values and relationships as well as for gathering and
interpretation of information.

 It can come as a result of marginalization and exclusion of persons.


FUNCTIONS OF CONFLICT

 Generally speaking it is very natural for people to perceive


conflict but experience has proved that conflict also has
some virtues which may sometimes become evident after it
has been resolved.
Here are some positive functions of conflict;

 Conflict helps establish identity and independence


 Conflict can build up new relationships
 Conflict can create coalitions to achieve common goals
 Conflict helps parties’ assess each other’s power and can work to redistribute power
 Conflict serves as a safety valve mechanism, which helps to sustain relationships.
 Conflict establishes and maintains group identities
 Conflict enhances group cohesion through issues belief clarification, when a group is
threatened; its members pull together in solidarity
 Conflict creates or modifies rules, laws and institutions
TYPES OF CONFLICTS

 Intra personal conflict - This refers to conflicts occurring within a person, usually people who
need to work on their inner struggles and issues in order to be constructive in social conflicts

 Inter personal conflict - this is conflict between individuals or small groups of people

 Intra group conflict - this is conflict within or inside a group. It refers to those conflicts that
happen within a particular group, whether it is a religious, ethnic, political or other type of
identified group

 Inter group conflict - this is conflict between two or more groups, it refers to conflicts occurring
between large organized social groups e.g. the TRC and the Red Cross
CAUSES OF CONFLICT;

 Information - this involves lack of information and misinformation as well as differing views on what data are relevant; the interpretation of that data and
how one performs the interpretation.
 Relationship - this results from strong emotion, stereotypes, miscommunication and repetitive negative behavior, it is the type conflict which provides fuel
for disputes and can promote destructive conflict even when the conditions to resolve the other sources of conflict can be met.

 Interest conflict - this involves actual or perceived competition over interest or resources, e.g. power, jobs, housing less salaries

 Structural conflict - this is caused by unequal or unfair distribution of power and resources

 Values conflict - this arise over ideological differences or differing standards on evaluation of ideas behavior, when these values are imposed on groups or
groups prevented from up holding their values.
Management and resolution of conflict

 Conflicts are a natural occurrence, resolving them does not occur


naturally, one may need to understand the way conflicts could be
managed or prevented. One must strive to resolve conflicts in such
a way that all parties are satisfied to forestall any recurrence.
Conflict can be resolved through the following mean;
 Mediation - This is a process through which a third party provides procedural assistance to help
individuals or groups to resolve their differences, it is a voluntary process ‘
 Negotiation - negotiation is a voluntary problem solving or joint decision making process in which two or
more parties meet to discuss their problems and try to come to a joint solution’
 Facilitation - This is where a third party helps to improve communication between parties usually in a
meeting
 Adjudication - This is where a judge or magistrate can impose a decision after hearing legal argument
from both
 Force - This is where force, power or violence is used to resolved conflict Conflict has negative and
positive effects wherein some use it as an opportunity.
