• WISH + PAST SIMPLE/PAST CONTINUOUS/COULD


USE
• When we regret that a present situation is not as we would like it to
be

• I live in a town. (fact)


• I wish I lived in the countryside. (PAST SIMPLE!)

• Example 2:
• It’s raining. (fact, happening now)
• He wishes it wasn’t/weren’t raining. (past continuous)

• Example 2:
WISH + could
• We use 'could' with 'wish' to talk about ability and to talk about
possibility.

• I cannot speak Spanish. (fact, inability)


• I wish I could speak Spanish.

• I cannot go to the party. (It’s not possible for me to...)


• I wish I could go to the party.
