What is Measure of Central Tendency?

If X1, X2, X3, X4 . . . . . . . Xn are n observation of a

variable X, then the tendency of the values to
concentrate at their center is called central
tendency and any measure indicating the center
of their distribution is called Measure of Central
Tendency.
The best quantity that describe central tendency
effectively is Average.

What Is An Average?
An Average is a single value that summarizes the
data. Such a value representing the whole data
must be that value around which the
observations have tendency to concentrate.
That is, it is a central value about which all the
data is distributed.
Also this measure is the first characteristic of the
interest In a distribution.

Important Purpose of Average
Average serves two important Purpose which
are
1. No doubt a frequency distribution reduces
the data into 8 to 25 classes, but an average
further reduces the data into one value.
2. It also describe indirectly but with some
accuracy about the population from which
the sample is drawn.

Properties of An Average

1. It should be rigidly defined.

2. It should be easy to calculate and simple to understand.

3. It should based on all the observation.

4. It should be capable of further mathematical treatment.

5. it should not be affected by extreme values.
