SOCIO-CULTURAL

IMPACTS OF TOURISM
AND HOSPITALITY

TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY

-increases the acculturation process
as well as the cultural convergence
of people.
-it is a vital force in acculturation
since it causes more interactions
between peoples.
ACCULTURATION

defined as those changes hat occur
in a culture through borrowing from
other cultures.
-these changes may include,
technology, language and values
CULTURAL CONVERGENCE

-is the tendency of the world
cultures to become more alike.

A very good example of this is the adoption of many European

ways by people of less developed countries because of their
exposure to European Culture and Technology.

POSITIVE EFFECTS OF
TOURISM AND
HOSPITALITY ON
CULTURE
1. INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION

• MOBILITY – is a prerequisite of tourism and
hospitality, is a necessary of a different social groups,
nationalities, and cultures to meet and interact.

•CROSS CULTURAL COMMUNICATION - may

promote changes in local culture while preserving
local ethic and cultural identity.
-Its quality is of prime importance it contributes to the
promotion of understanding between tourist and their
host
2. RENAISSANCE OF NATIVE CULTURE

Tourism and hospitality may be important to
the host country to remind its people of its
history and culture.
Model cultural centers in both developed
and developing countries have been highly
profitable and have helped maintain interest
in their cultures.
TRADITIONAL ART FORMS

-Have been revived in
several countries.
-Tourism and
hospitality has
stimulated the
preservation of
traditional art
including traditional
songs and dances
MODEL CULTURE VILLAGES

Has contributed largely to the
renaissance of native traditions and
crafts.
Create historical and ethnic
environments designed to perpetuate
tradition and stimulate awareness of
the local area.
2 MAIN PORPOSES for CULTURAL
MODEL VILLAGES:

The first is to provide a location where
visitors may observe and participate in
a particular culture without disrupting
the everyday life of the who live in the
area.
The second is to portray the past
history of the area.

An example of a cultural model village is the Polynesian Cultural in Hawaii which

was designed to keep the traditional art forms and practices alive, giving the visitor a
chance to view some limited historical historical aspects of lifestyle as it once was.
NEGATIVE CULTURAL
IMPACT

hosts and guests
 Tourism encourages growth in local crime and deviant
behavior
 Sexual exploitation of locals by some tourists
 Destruction of traditions, as locals adopt incomers’
fashions and behaviors
 Relationships between hosts and guest become
increasingly commercial and superficial as tourist

POLITICAL UPHEAVALS
AND ACTUAL IMPACT
ON TOURISM
POLITICAL UPHEAVALS AND
ACTUAL IMPACT ON TOURISM

 People consider a lot of factors when deciding where they should or should not go in
another country, and one such factor is politics as well which can also often impact their
decisions, sometimes them without even realizing it
 When you think of it, the first reason why there is a decrease in the number of people
visiting America would Trump. He has made it difficult for people of certain nationalities to
get a visa, which obviously impacts the number of visitors, but there is more to it. We’re are
not talking about only America here because all countries get affected due to political
decisions. Issue of Political stability
 The issue of political stability and political relations within and between states is extremely
important in determining the image of destinations in tourist-generating regions and the
real and perceived safety of tourists (Hall 1996). Also the media through books, magazines,
newspapers, satellites and cable links has a substantial influence on images of destinations,
especially as media selects particular representations and interpretation of places, events
and images which would have the greatest influence on creating stereotypical images of a
tourist destination in tourist –generating regions. Warfare, coups and political strikes or
protests causes problematic concerns in the tourism development and the attraction of
visitors.
POLITICAL UPHEAVALS AND
ACTUAL IMPACT ON TOURISM

 As Ankomah and Crompton (1990, p19) suggest, a major consideration in
a potential traveler’s decision to visit any foreign destination is that
country’s political stability and general internal security conditions. Any
evidence of domestic turmoil is likely to result in a decision not to visit
that country. Tourism and Politics  Politics: How decisions are made;
“Politics is about power, who gets what, where, how, and why.”  The
role of government in tourism -Responsible for the formulation of
tourism policies -Provides guidelines for the development of destinations
-Regulates the industry in collaboration with other government industries
 Tourism promotion agencies Public/Private Organizations 
Organizations whose membership includes both public and private
entities whose funding is generated from both public and private sources
-Chambers of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureaus (C&VB) -
Convention centers
