BAMBOO

Bamboo is a perennial plant – grow from rhizome bud in


soil
Classified in family of Graminae and sub-family of
Bambusoidae.
Record as having 75 genus and 1250 species worldwide.
In Peninsular Malaysia - I 1 genus and about at least 63
species - 25 indigenous and others are planted
Only l4 commercial
Basic characteristics: bamboo stem is woody, hollow
with node and internode
- The rhizome bud turns to shoot within one year (in the
beginning of rainy season)
- Commonly, one clumps (rumpun) can produces about
8-14 shoots yearly

DISTRIBUTION
 Found in humid tropical forests especially in areas near the
valley and river.
 Available in 1000m area from sea level

 Secondary forest (in thicket or belukar)

 In logged over forest area

 In the riverbanks and hillsides

 Planted in villagers for domestic uses

 Planted in city as ornamental plant (landscape)

 About 5% from total forest area


BAMBOO FEATURES

 1. Parennial plant (bersaka)

i) Single type (Monopodial or Leptomorph)


Example: genus Phyllostachys- temperate and subtropical
areas

ii) Cluster type (Sympodial or Pachymorph)


Example: Bambusa, Dendrocalamus, Gigantochloa,
Schizostachum dan Thyrostachys

Example: Arundinaria, Chimonobambusa, Semiarundinaria,
Shibataea dan Sinobambusa

2. Stem –woody, hollow with node and internode
3. Rhizome – (grow from soil), fibrous root and acts as a foundation
to the bamboo clump.
4. The leave is tapering (taper diamond/edge shape)
5. Growth vertically and able to climb.
Most bamboo growth vertically and only a few climbing. Example:
Dinochloa scandens - buluh akar.
6. Stem sheath (kelopak) – “modified
leaf” locates in stem
Function – to protect a new seedling and a
new internode (ruas)
