Community health Nurse as generalist


 Works outside the hospital
 Primary responsibility – health education / health teaching.
 Focus : Health promotion and illness prevention
 Goal : To achieve optimum level of functioning (OLOF)
which means high level of wellness
Two Aspects
1. Health Promotion – increase the level of health
Healthy to healthier – (DERS)
D – diet should be well balanced, follow ABC
A- aim ideal weight (BMI)
B – build a healthy nutrition practices
C – choose food wisely
E – exercise is important in circulation
a. moderate intensity – everyday
b. vigorous intensity – 3x a week
c. cumulative - at least 30 minutes per session every day
R - Rest: sleep of 6 – 8 hours/day and stress management.
S - Stop smoking: top 3 chemicals.
 Nicotine: addictive.
 Carbon monoxide: interferes with oxygenation that
may cause hypoxia.
 Tar: paralyzes the cilia; prone to respiratory
infection.
2. Illness prevention: maintain health.
 Teach patient to adapt a healthy lifestyle.
 Specific protection: such as vaccines, sunscreen, mosquito
nets, handwashing, use of PPEs, sanitation, isolation.

Different Fields of Nursing
 Public health nursing – using of nursing skills in the
application of public health functions and social assistance
within the context of public health programs designed to
promote health and prevent illness
 Community health nursing – it refers to a service rendered by
a professional nurse with communities, groups, families,
individuals at home, in health centers, clinics, schools, in
places of work for the promotion of health, prevention of
illness, care of the sick at home and rehabilitation ( Ruth B.
Freeman)
* have often been interchangeably used in the Philippines
 Community based nursing – advocates for health promotion, educating
the public and patients on preventing injury and illnesses, participating in
rehabilitation and providing care and support
 School health nursing - aims to promote the health of school
personnel and students that could hinder learning or performance.
According to World Health Organization (WHO, 1997), “to learn effectively,
children need good health.” School Health Services:

 Occupational Health Nursing - aimed at assisting workers in all occupations
to cope with actual and potential stresses in relation to their work and work
environment.
 Community Mental Health Nursing - Community Mental Health Nurses are
specialized nurses who provide wholistic nursing services for people with
mental health issues, in a community setting such as caring and confidential
supports for the clients, using the recovery model for care. The services
may include:
1. Treatment Planning
2. Medication Management
3. Assessment
4. Counseling
5. Family Support
6. Education
7. Group Support
8. Facilitate services with visiting psychiatrists
 Home Health Care Home health care helps in providing nursing
care to the individuals and families in their own place of residence
mainly to minimize the effects of illness and disability.
 Hospice Home Care Hospice home care specifically renders to
terminally ill, intended to provide comfort to improve quality of life
provide support to the patient and family.
 Faith community nursing Faith community nursing or parish
nursing is the practice of art and science and nursing combine with
spiritual care.
