OVERVIEW / HISTORY
Mulan is a fictional folk heroine from the Northern and
Southern dynasties era (4th to 6th century AD) of Chinese
history. The story of the original Mulan quite different
from that of the Disney animated movie from 1998 and the
recent live-action adaptation. The Ballad of Mulan, a
collection of stories from the 12th century, contains the
earliest print copy of the tale that is still in existence.
Due to references to the Northern Wei dynasty, which
ruled from the fourth through the early sixth centuries, it
is believed that this short poem was first written as a folk
story in the fourth or fifth century.
BALLAD OF MULAN
The sound of creaking. (Mulan speaks)
Mulan sits in the doorway in front of her loom. “I open the door to my eastern chamber,
When the loom grows silent, From far away, she cannot hear the sounds of her parents calling for her And sit on the bed of my western chamber.
We can only hear the sound of her sighs. Only the cries of the enemy cavalry in the Yàn hills.
Girl, who are you thinking about? She traveled ten thousand li, I take off my military robes
Girl… who do you long for? She flew over mountains and through mountain passes And put on my old clothes.
(Mulan replies) The sound of a war gong pierces the air,
“There is only one man I think about The winter sun shines brightly on her coat of steel. I sit in front of the window as I comb my long flowing
There is only one man I long for The general dead after a hundred battles, hair
Last night I saw the conscription notice, The warriors return after ten years. And look into the mirror as I apply makeup
The Khan is issuing a great draft – They return to see the Son of Heaven,
A dozen volumes of battle rolls, Sitting in the royal court I go outside to see my comrades
Each one with my father’s name. He unrolls the scroll of merit a dozen times They are all shocked and astounded.
My father has no son old enough to take his place, Giving hundreds and thousands of rewards
I, Mulan, have no elder brother. The Khan asks Mulan what she desires “We traveled together for twelve years,” (they say),
I’m willing to buy a horse and saddle, (Mulan replies) “But we never suspected that Mulan was a woman!”
I will take my father’s place in battle.” I have no need to be promoted to a prominent position
She buys a fine steed at the east market; I only ask for a camel that can travel a thousand li Most people tell the gender of a rabbit by its movement:
A saddle and blanket at the west market; That can take me back to my hometown The male runs quickly, while the female often keeps her
A bridle at the south market; Her parents hear that their daughter has returned, eyes shut.
And a long whip at the north market. They welcome her at the entrance to the town.
At dawn, she leaves her parents’ home When Elder Sister hears of Mulan’s return, But when the two rabbits run side by side,
and camps beside the Yellow River before dusk. she stands in the doorway wearing a beautiful dress Can you really discern whether I am a he or a she?
From far away, she cannot hear the sounds of her parents When Little Brother hears that his sister has returned,
calling for her He sharpens his knife to slaughter a pig and a lamb.
Only the rushing waters of the Yellow River.
She leaves the Yellow River at dawn,
And reaches reach Black Mountain before dusk.
ORIGINAL
The Ballad of Mulan is the oldest known version of
Mulan’s story. Most likely composed during the era of
Northern Wei (around 400 AD), this one poem ended up
inspiring countless retellings for centuries to come.

The Balad most likely began as oral tradition, and was

passed down for over a century until it was finally
preserved in written form during the Tang dynasty. But as
an anonymous and undated work, very little can be said
about it with certainty.
PLOT
What is the plot of Mulan?
Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into
the Chinese military, Mulan takes his spot --
though, as a girl living under a patriarchal
regime, she is technically unqualified to serve.
She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to
train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her
dragon, Mushu, she uses her smarts to help ward
off a Hun invasion.
