Notes and changes in the Enemy Within Campaign,

Enemy in the Shadows

Introduction : Why is it always those three…

15 years ago, 3 students of the Dark Arts came to Nuln to study under the same
Tzeenchian master. He trained them, taught them magic, and set them one against the
others, cause such is the Lord of Change’s way.

One was charismatic and lazy, he decided to get the help of a demon, he then came back
to his hometown, Boggenhaffen, in the hope of exchanging his soul against a bigger
sacrifice, his name is Johannes Teugen.

One was a beautiful, intelligent and angry woman. She decided to change the world in the
literal way by spreading mutations and leading a band of chaos beasts. She became an
important member of the Red Crown and installed her laboratory in the mountain nears
Grissenwald, she is Etelka Herzen

The third was the bastard of a minor noble from a cursed house. He grew up with his
younger and legitimate siblings that literally tortured him. He went to Nuln to try to surpass
them, compensating by hard work and tenacity, his lack of confidence. He came into the
Purple Hand, but had to leave the region to leave his past (and witch hunters) behind, and
so he arrived in Middenheim some years ago. His name is Kastor Lieberung.

Kastor received a letter informing him of an inheritance, and as his mother lineage is
unclear, he thinks it could be true. But you don’t become a Magister Impedementae
without taking precaution and his past troubles in Nuln made him cautious and he decided
to say as little as possible to his colleagues. But a huge amount of money would advance
his plans for a unified cult.

Unfortunately, people talk, and soon, members of other cells of the Purple Hand, but also
members of the Red Crown heard about Kastor’s trip. The Purple Hand is curious and
wants to be in any windfall. The Red Crown doesn’t know of the inheritance but would
gladly get rid of the Magister. The cult sent some of his killers to get Kastor’s Head.

BOLD ADVENTURERS

Changes :
● The raven is in the next inn
● Pandora “Pea” Lostpocket from the EiS companion is here and source of rumours.
She is also on the run from the Lowhaven, as she fled the organisation before a
heist in Middenheim. She has a spot in the coach.
● Lady Isolde is worried, Janna is crying, and Marie’s left arm is broken and in a sling.
They’re on the run after Isolde fled the wedding with a local Lord Winfried von
Ranachfells. As soon as she met him she realised he had a bad streak. He is a
violent and cruel man.

Extra scenes :
● Pandora sings the rumour about the Emperor and is Griffin in a cheeky way.
● Some thugs (2-3 level 1 protagonists and a soldier) wearing the Ranachfel’s arms
burst into the inn and try to claim Lady Isolde. If the characters act she will offer
them some reward. If not, Marie will be killed in the fight and Isolde led away by
them.

Mistaken Identity
Blood on the Road
Changes :
● The leader is a Red Crown cultist. He will be carrying a portrait of Kastor, the
organisation has learned of Kastor’s trip and tries to stop it.
● The leader before dying will say “The Red Crown will rise again”. He has a red
crown tattoo on his chest.
● He has an extra mutation : regeneration but it only activates after his death.

The Inn of the seven Spokes / A Night a the Three Feathers

Instead of a quiet night at the inn, the characters will face a succession of combats and
mysteries inspired from a Night at the Three Feathers.
Note : The Raven from the coach and horses is here and goes from table to table talking

Extra scenes : a not so quite evening:

● When Pandora does her show, 2 halflings (peddlers / smugglers) will recognize her;
as they both work for the Lowhavens. They will decide to kidnap her.
● A vagrant wearing an old armour and a Ulric badge will tell a story of a white wolf
hunting around a village and the unsuccessful attempts of the villagers to catch him.
Until they found the head of the village, the smith, dead in his smithy hammer in his
hand. When the villagers prepare him for burial they realize he had a huge eye
where his navel should have been. The vagrant then goes on saying how the poor
people of the Empire are following a false leader, and a false god… He’s kicked out
of the inn with violence…
● A little after that, 3 priests of Morr in full funeral regalia and wearing masks will enter
the inn and ask for a room. They are Ranachfel’s men coming to kidnap Isolde.
● A little after that, someone will find the vagrant’s body (he has been killed by the
resurrected mutant’s chief). The heroes won’t be able to follow his tracks because
of the heavy rain.
● One of the false priests; without disguise, will come back to the common room and
spike the wine at Isolde’s table with a sleeping potion.
● Just before bedtime, the raven will summon a daemon from Ernst’s book. Ernst will
escape during the fight.

Extra scenes : chaos in the night

● The priests will try to kidnap Isolde (they will make some noise carrying the coffin in
the corridor)
● They’re should be a fight with the priest during which the halflings will kidnap
Pandora and stash her, first in their room, then in their cart in the stables
● After the fight they will notice one of the guards is missing (his body is hidden in a
barrel, should be easy to find). The mutant now has a crossbow and a sword again.
● After that, the characters will be awakened by a fire in the stables. The mutant from
the roof of the inn will shoot at anybody trying to stop the fire… If not engaged with
the mutant, the players should notice the concern of the halflings for Pandora who
is stashed in the stables…
● Isolde will ask for their help to accompany them to one of the temple of Shallya’s in
Altdorf where her aunt will offer her protection.
● Philippe, hurt during the fire will stay behind (important cause he comes back in the
next chapter)

Heart of the Empire

The Temple of Alessa’s Grace and the Owl and Scroll

Extra Scenes :
● At the temple (Altdorf, Crown of the Empire p119) they will meet Isolde’s aunt,
covered in blood of a difficult birth) She will ask them to wait while she thinks of a
solution, as among the head of the church in Altdorf is a member of the Ranachfel’s
family she doesn’t trust. She will pay for their lodging at the Owl and Scroll
● The inn is situated in the Schulergegend, is a place for students to discuss the most
heretical and dangerous theories in a game of wits and eloquence. It is protected by
Verena as the students only take these extreme positions to work on their
eloquence. The sign is of an owl holding a scroll, but due to time and cheekiness,
the scroll now looks like something else entirely….
◦ Introducing the Shallyan’s move to protect mutants as a medicine and a law
students discuss who should be protected by the law. The medicine student will
argue to defend even a man suffering mutations, the Verenan will be dead
against it and say death is the only option for these creatures (he will appear
extremely strict as he is unwillingly learning form Solkanites masters). The
students and professor present will give the “victory” to the medicine student.
◦ Introduce a future recurring character. The heroes will be able to notice a
shaven headed woman listening to all that from the shadows. Her figure is
striking, tall, muscular. Her anger at the medicine student is easily noticeable.
She is a warrior priestess of Sigmar and is looking for Slaneesh cultists in the
city (she will replace Sigrid the outlaw chief in DotR). The characters will
probably not interact with her, but they could hear rumours about her in the
temple of Sigmar or with witch hunter contacts. Her name is Sigrid
Silverhammer due to the unusual colour of her eyes.

A new friend, and a not so friendly old one

● When they go back to the temple the next day, the priestess says that she wants
them to bring Isolde to Bögenhafen, a free city, where she should be safe from
Ranachfel’s machinations. Also the mother at the temple there owes her a favour.
To get there they will use the ship of a boatman whom she saved the boathand from
a difficult child birth yesterday : Joseph Quartjin.
● As they exit the temple, they will meet Philippe. He has just arrived in Altdorf and is
very happy to meet them. He will join them for a drink. He is secretly working for
Ranachfel.
● After the Boatman Inn he will offer for a last drink in a place he knows. If the
characters tell him they’re being followed he will be surprised (because his thugs
are waiting ahead not following them, but the heroes are being followed by the
Purple Hand) and will offer to set a trap.
Once in a dark alley, he will turn around and point his gun at the heroes, and call his
friends. He will be surprised again as the thugs do come from what is now behind
him. The thugs will either be 3-4 members of the Fish or 4-6 Lowhaven if the heroes
had issue with the halflings at the seven spokes and they managed to escape.
Philippe will say he doesn’t want violence but just for them to leave Isolde to him. It
should come to a fight and you should make sure Philippe death is temporary (he
could flee the scene or use a fate point to come back later)

On to Bögenhafen
Good morning travellers
● On the boat the heroes could notice that there is something wrong with Joseph’s
shipment of beer. The label on the barrel is hastily glued onto a dwarven rune.
Joseph is working with Steinhager and is transporting dwarven beer without paying
the correct taxes. Joseph is honest but owes a lot of money to the Steinhager and
feels he doesn’t have a choice. This could appear when the boat is controlled by the
patrol. One of the patrollers is the halfling from EiS and she could be bribed.

Weissbruck

● Adolphus will not be attacking the heroes. He follows them to his trap in
Bogenhafen. He will meet Anke Dorflinger (EiS companion) to discuss their plan.
She’s coming from Ubersreik and will be continuing to Altdorf.

● Looking for clues the characters could learn :

◦ Dorflinger had been waiting for Adolphus for a few days.
◦ Adolphus already came in Weissbruck a few months ago (when he left
Ubersreik to Altdorf and Nuln)
◦ Some guy, handsome (Heinrick Fieldbach, a member of the Red Crown looking
to murder kastor after the failure of the mutants on the road) asked about
somebody looking like Kastor, he had a portrait… He then went on talking with
the dodgier guys in the tavern then left with them. On a very good gossip
success, they will learn that these guys are most probably wreckers operating
from an island a bit south from here.

The Ambush

● Heinrick Fieldbachof and some wreckers (followers of a twisted version of

Bogenhauer akin to Stromfells) will ambush the characters using fake signalization.
If they had been warned they should be allowed rolls to avoid the Berebeli to get
stuck in a sand bank.
● If the Berebeli is stuck, they will try to burn it with burning oil. Then they will attack
anybody fleeing.
● If the Berebeli avoids the trap, they will use harpoons attached to trees to try to stop
the boat and seize it. Heinrick should stay in the cover shooting at them with a bow.
The wreckers will fight to the death screaming their god’s name.
● After the fight the characters should see a giant eel eating the dead bodies in the
river. It will follow them from a distance henceforth. Josef, a very superstitious man,
will be very worried about it.

The False inheritance

Bogenhafen

The docks are locked because of a strike. Helmut Kohl, Steinhager’s man, will pay the
characters to unload the boat. This will cause a brawl with the dockers.
If they help, Helmut will have a good opinion of the characters and could be helpful. He is
a loyal servant of the house, but could give information on the city.

At the Temple of Shallya

Some mutants, following the Emperor’s Edict have taken shelter in the temple. Nobody is
happy about that. Certainly not Mother Rubenstein, but she can’t say it. This mutant crisis
will be a good excuse for people not to listen to the characters, everybody is “too busy with
the Schaffenfest and these monsters in the Temple of Shallya ! “
She’s not happy about Isolde (she doesn’t want any trouble with the Ranachfels) and will
send her to the Mercyhouse.

Visiting the Lawyers

Adolphus has been busy since he arrived (2 days before the PC) he started investigating
the Ordo Septenarius thinking it could be the local branch of the Purple Hand. He will write
in his blood OS when left for dead by Gideon
Gideon will cross the path of the characters under the guise of an old lady when they climb
the stairs to the lawyers. Adolphus will be carrying an arrest warrant for Kastor coming
from the city of Ubersreik.

The Schaffen Fest

The Drunken Dwarf : Gottri is a sewer jack and ratcatcher. The last one in town, as all the
others left the city or were found dead in the sewers. And nobody wants to hear it ! The
fact that he is a drunk that rambles about skavens doesn’t help. If the characters talk to
him, he will tell them the city doesn’t want to hire new ratcatchers due to insufficient
funding. He will also tell them how he came from Middenheim to Bogenhafen after a fight
against rat men in the sewers there. He has been drinking to forget this fight, how most of
his crew died and how he got his aching and stiff leg…
When describing the 3 legged goblin, the Doctor pretends he comes from Grissenwald. In
a way an astute alliteration but an untruth. Later the doctor should say that the goblin isn’t
from Grissenwald but from Kemperbad. He bought it there from a mad hunter who
captured the beast in the Barren Hills (in this version Etelka is allied with beastmen not
goblins, but bands of mutated goblins roam the Barren Hills)

Into the Darkness

The daemon is bound to the sewer, free to move there, as suggested, and has been
around for a while now eating ratcatchers and beggars. The demon opened the
door for the goblin.
From the entrance of the temple one can spot footprints (Gideon’s carrying Gottri’s
body) leading a bit farther west. There they will find Gottri’s body above a manhole.

Make sure that if the characters get sick they will be sent to Elvyra’s rather than one
of the too expensive doctors or to Shallya’s temple that will advise for prayer and a
bath…

Chasing shadows

● No modification there. One lead though if needed, they will spot Steinhager leaving
hidden under a big hat and a cape (with his body shape, not the best concealment).
If they follow, he’ll lead them to the Crossed Piked, where he will be friendly with the
guards there and make a big donation. He will also have a talk with Baumann
(concerning shady tradings), and will unwillingly drop the invitation there, just under
Baumann nose (who will pretend not to have seen anything to get some leverage
on the characters if they pick it up)
● One other thing. Teugen knows Kastor. He hasn’t seen him for at least 5 years but
knows he is a member of the Purple Hand. Gideon will have warned him, so he
won’t be surprised to see him in his office. Gideon (The Changeling) will have told
him that Kastor is not Kastor and shouldn’t be trusted.

The darkest hour

● It’s important for the follow-up of the adventure that the characters witness some
spontaneous mutations in the streets. Maybe had a fight scene where the guards
following them from the fire find them on the docks and have all become mutants.

● Gideon is the Changeling, so will escape the fight.

● If the characters managed to avoid the worst, they should be able to stay in town.
Yes, the arson. Yes, the murder. But so much happened during that night. If they’re
smart enough a trial should come from the night and they could intervene in it. This
way they’ll also have some weeks of downtime to change careers and such.. They’ll
also learn about the dozen mutants that came to take refuge in the Temple after
having been transformed during the dreaded night.
