Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is positioned to play a larger role in the market for
specific IaaS/PaaS solutions. By 2025, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure will at least
double its cloud infrastructure platform services market share from the current
3%.
Oracle has intelligently prioritized OCI’s strategic roadmap and the features most
important to its customers, rather than directly pursuing its competition. As a
result, Oracle is now starting to position itself as a viable option when supporting
non-Oracle workloads. Oracle has demonstrated impressive improvements in both
the IaaS and PaaS capabilities of OCI in the past year.
Based on these recent improvements, OCI’s capabilities crossed a critical
threshold in 2020, making OCI a reasonable scenario-specific option for
enterprise production use. Furthermore, OCI meets typical enterprise expectations
for cloud security, including a notable integration with the Oracle CASB Cloud
service. Analyst: Tobi Bet

successful in winning workloads using non-Oracle technologies.
• OCI's 78% score improved the most compared to all other cloud providers (from 62% 2019 2020 2021
in 2020) in the Solution Scorecards. This is the second straight year Oracle has shown Alibaba 49% 69% 81%
the greatest improvement of all vendors evaluated. Amazon 88% 93% 94%
Google 49% 71% 75%
• Oracle’s score in the Scorecard for Required criteria grew from 74% to 90%, including
IBM 33% 24% 40%

• OCI also improved in all criteria and use cases in the Critical Capabilities: “Oracle is
able to support requirements across all use cases except those involving edge Analysts: Lydia Leong

• We improved in both “ability to execute” and “completeness in vision” in the Gartner
Magic Quadrant: “Though Oracle is starting from a smaller base, OCI has added more
capabilities on a percentage basis over the past year than any other provider in this
market.”

• The most complete support for hybrid cloud strategies: Oracle offers a broad and consistent set of
cloud services across 30 commercial and government cloud regions in 14 countries on five continents
to serve our global customer base. We also provide unique offerings to give customers cloud
capabilities in their own data centers with Dedicated Region and Exadata Cloud@Customer, in remote
locations with Roving Edge Infrastructure, or across OCI and Microsoft Azure.
• Security that’s built in, on by default, at no extra charge: Instead of nickel and diming customers for
everything from log ingestion to security posture analysis, OCI turns on things like encryption by
default, makes it easy to standardize security with tools like Security Zones, and includes most security
services free within your use of OCI services. Enterprises like Darling Ingredients can give all their IT
professionals the tools they need, without making security tradeoffs because of cost.
• Superior price-performance: OCI offers superior prices (see Redmonk Review) without requiring long
term commitments, and the lowest rates for important services like data egress and high performance
storage. For example, Oracle’s AMD-based VM pricing is offered at 3X better price/performance than
AWS for general purpose & memory-optimized instances. OCI block storage is 98% lower cost than to
AWS EBS Provisioned IOPS SSD (io2). Oracle Database runs faster and has superior cost/performance Analyst: Raj Bala

• High customer satisfaction. In the IDC 2020 Industry Cloud Path survey, where IDC surveyed 935 IaaS
customers on their satisfaction with the top IaaS vendors including Oracle, AWS, Microsoft Azure,
IBM Cloud and Google Cloud, OCI received the highest satisfaction score.

• OCI is gaining traction with customers based on recent market data as well as
increased GTP inquiry volume. Oracle Cloud uses different concepts, terminology,
definitions, and architectural implementations as compared to other hyperscale
providers. As customers look to adopt OCI services, they need to be aware of these
differences (and similarities) so they can appropriately plan the “administrative”
components of their environment (account structure, billing, etc.) as well as their
deployment patterns to enable adequately resilient and available applications. This
research provides a guidance framework that clients can use to understand OCI
constructs, as well as describe best practices for implementing and deploying these
constructs.
• Logical boundaries are provided in OCI through the use of tenancy and
compartments, enabling delegated administration and isolation of resources.
• Oracle has more than tripled the number of global OCI regions in the last 12 months.
However, a minority of these regions are configured for true high availability and
resiliency of applications, thus organizations should choose their regional
deployments with these limitations in mind.
• Tight integration is provided in OCI with existing Oracle technologies, including
Oracle Database and Exadata, which is appealing to organizations with application
dependencies on these technologies. Analyst: Brian Adler
