VISUALIZE

Make a picture or movie in
your mind to go along with
what you read!

QUESTION

What does it mean?


Ask yourself questions as
you read.
Use words like-
Why? How? What if?
What questions should we

CONNECT
What does it mean??
As you read, look for
connections to your own life,
other books or in the world
around you!
What connections can we make?
 
“This part makes me think of a time
when I…”
 
“This reminds me of the book…”
 
“This is like what’s happening in the
world because...”
CLARIFY
What does it mean??
When you get to the end
of a page or paragraph,
check to see if you
understand!
Ways to help clarify:

“I’m confused about…”

“I don’t really understand…”

“A word that I don’t know is…”


INFER
What does it mean??
Use clues in the story to decide
for yourself what’s happening!
Sentence starters for inferring:

“Since … happened in the story,


then…”

“I think that… because the story


said…”

“I can infer that…”


SUMMARIZE
What does it mean??
Tell the most
important information
from the reading-
leave out the small
details!
Summary Starters:
