ENERGY
ENERGY SOURCE:
OIL
DEFINITION OF OIL:
• Oil is a non-renewable source of energy, which is
a fossil fuel that is formed by natural processes
such a anaerobic decomposition of organic
matter.
HOW IS ENERGY PRODUCED FROM OIL?
• The extracted crude oil is burned to heat water
which then produces steam.
• The steam produced propels the blades of a
turbine.
• The turbine is attached to a generator.
• This which then produces electricity.
ADVANTAGES OF USING OIL AS AN ENERGY
SOURCE
• Oil can easily be transported by a network of
pipelines.
• It can be used in a wide range of applications.
• It can produce a large amount of energy.
• It is easy to extract.
• Petroleum is a highly dense fuel source.
DISADVANTAGES OF USING OIL AS AN ENERGY
SOURCE
• Burning oil produces carbon dioxide gas, a
greenhouse gas that contributes towards climate
change.
• Producing electricity from crude oil is expensive
compared to other fossil fuels such as coal or
gas.
• Drilling for oil is dangerous.
• Oil exploration takes time.
• Oil is usually imported in most countries and it
becomes more expensive as reserves reduce
and imports increase.
RENEWABLE OR NON-RENEWABLE?
• Oil is a non-renewable source of energy.
