Introduction to Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a branch of
mathematics which studies the
relationships between angles and
lengths of triangles. It is a very
important topic of mathematics just
like statistics, linear algebra and
calculus. In addition to mathematics,
it also contributes majorly to
engineering, physics, astronomy and
architectural design.
Angles and Arcs
lengths
An angle is a geometrical figure when two lines
meet at a common point on a plane. In a given
circle, the length of the arc is a portion of the
length of its circumference.
The arc length will be the measure of the distance
along the curved line making up the arc. It will be
longer than the straight line distance between its
endpoints which is known as a chord.
Arc Length Formula  ----
• Arc length= 2nr(9/360)
• Arc length = r.ø
Trigonometric Functions
Trigonometric functions are also known as Circular Functions can be simply
defined as the functions of an angle of a triangle. It means that the relationship
between the angles and sides of a triangle are given by these trigonometrical
functions.
The six basic trigonometric functions are sine, cosine, secant, co-secant,
tangent, and co-tangent.
Trigonometric Ratio: sin θ = Perpendicular/Hypotenuse
cos θ = Base/Hypotenuse
tan θ = Perpendicular/Base
sec θ = Hypotenuse/Base
cosec θ = Hypotenuse/Perpendicular
cot θ = Base/Perpendicular
Trigonometric Table
Compound and Multiple Angles
Compound Angle: The algebraic sum of 2 or more angles can be called
a Compound Angle. Trigonometric identities are used to represent
compound angles. The basic operations of finding the sum and
difference of functions can be computed using the concept of
compound angles.
Multiple Angle: The values of multiple angles are not possible to find
directly but their values can be calculated by expressing each
trigonometric function in its expanded form. The trigonometric
function of multiple angles Is also known as the multiple angle formula.
Trigonometric equation

Trigonometric equation is an equation involving

one or more trigonometric ratios of unknown
angles. It is expressed as ratios of sine(sin),
cosine(cos), tangent(tan), cotangent(cot),
secant(sec), cosecant(cosec) angles. For example,
cos2 x + 5 sin x = 0 is a trigonometric equation. All
possible values which satisfy the given
trigonometric equation are called solutions of the
given trigonometric equation.
