LAW OF ACCELERATION
Which cart moves faster?

The cart being pushed by two

boys will move faster. The two
boys exert a greater force on the
same amount of load than the
lone boy.
What does "F=ma" mean in Newton's Second Law?

Newton's second law of motion describes the relationship between

an object's mass and the amount of force needed to accelerate it.
Newton's second law is often stated as F=ma, which means the force
(F) acting on an object is equal to the mass (m) of an object times its
acceleration (a). This means the more mass an object has, the more
force you need to accelerate it. And the greater the force, the greater
the object's acceleration.
What is Mass?
Mass is the measure of an object’s resistance to acceleration.
How is mass related to Inertia?
Mass is a measure of inertia since it is also defined as a measure of an
object’s resistance to a change in its state of motion. A large mass is
associated to a large inertia, while a small mass implies a small inertia.
What is Weight?
Weight is a type of force. Specifically , it is the force that an object
experiences due to gravity.
How is Weight related to Mass?
Weight is a product of an object’s mass and the acceleration due to
gravity. In equation form:
W = mg
Why do you think is the second law of motion important?
The second law of motion is important because it explains the
relationship among the mass of a body, its acceleration, and the force
applied to it.
a. At constant mass, application of greater force results in greater
acceleration.
b. At constant acceleration, a massive object will require more force than
a less massive object.
c. At constant force, a massive object will have acceleration less than a
less massive object will (or, less massive object will accelerate more
than a massive object).
Why does Gravity cause uniform acceleration?
A constant acceleration is caused by gravity because the gravitational
force acting on an object is constant.
