INTRODUCTION

There are various health problems associated with the

regular use of computers, such as
1. Back Pain.
2. Eyestrain.
3. Repetitive Strain Injury /injuries to the wrists, (RSI)
Employers must take steps to protect employees whose work
involves ICT.
Employer obligations
Laws have been passed to ensure that employers provide safe working environment for
anyone who works with computers. This is called the 'healt h and safety at w o r k act
(1974).’

The law States that an employer must...

 Provide tilt able screens.
 Provide anti-glare screen filters.
 Provide adjuStable chairs.
 Provide foot supports.
 Make sure lighting is suitable.
 Make sure there is sufficient space to work.
 Train employees to use stations correctly.
 Ensure employees have sufficient breaks.
 Employers should pay for regular eye tests for employees
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH POLICY AND PROCEDURE
 A planned system of working
to prevent illness and injury where you work.

The OHS officers / recognize and identify the hazards

and risks.
1.) Do not work alone so that there’s someone who
can take care of you in case of emergency

2.) Always power off the computer and unplug the computer
before working on it.

Many power supply units have a switch on the back, killing power to
the device and ultimately the rest of your PC

If your PSU has one, be sure to turn it to the off position. If

you're working on a laptop, netbook, or tablet, be sure to
remove the battery, as well as disconnect the AC power,
before removing or disassembling anything. Do not even
open the computer case unless the power is turned off.
3.) Take away any liquid near your working area to avoid
getting electrocuted or accidentally
damaging computer parts.

4.) Be careful with tools that may cause short circuit.

Your greatest enemy when working inside the
computer is Electrostatic Discharge or ESD.
When working inside the
computer, more damage is
done by electrostatic
discharge than by any other
single factor. In fact, any
time the computer is open,
you risk damaging the
circuits inside by
electrostatic discharge.
That’s the bad news. The
good news is this risk can be
almost totally eliminated by
a few common sense
precautions.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
 Most people think about static electricity when they shock someone after walking across the
carpet or when they are folding their laundry.. Static electricity is the buildup of an electric
charge resting on a surface.

 Static electricity or specifically ElectroStatic Discharge (ESD) occurs when a small electric
charge builds up and suddenly finds a path to ground and discharges. This buildup may
damage or even destroy a PC component

 At least 3,000 volts of static electricity must build up before a person can feel ESD, but less than
30 volts of static electricity can damage a computer component.
 When working on the inside of a PC it is vital that you use proper grounding equipment
Preventing ESD Damage
Use antistatic wrist straps when working on computers
Use grounded mats on workbenches
Use antistatic bags to store components
Use grounded floor mats in work areas
5.) Always ground yourself before touching any part of the computer
to prevent ESD from occuring.
Proper Use of Antistatic Wrist Strap
 Connect the cable (Aligator clip end)to the metal chassis of
the computer
 Wrap the strap around your wrist .
 CAUTION: Never w ear an antistatic wrist strap if you are repairing a monitor or
CRT

The connection will keep your body at the same voltage (potential) as the computer
Use anti-static mats on the workbench and floor.
Store Circuit As you

computer,
store them in
anti-static
bags. Keep

components
in anti-static
bags
...but leave the computer plugged in.
6.) Hold the components on the edges and do not touch
the Integrated Circuit (IC) parts.
