What is motivation ?
Motivation describes the factors that arouse, maintain and channel behavior towards a goal.
There are two ways we can think about motivation at work and what cause it :
• Motivation can be the will to work due enjoyment of the work itself. This implies that motivation
comes from within an individual employee.
• An alternative view si that it is the will or desire to achieve a given target or goal that is the result of
external factors, such as the promise of a reward, or to avoid the threat of punishment.
Why is motivation important ?
Organisation whose workforces possess high levels of motivation tend to show the
following characteristics:
• A low level of absenteeism by employees at all levels within the business
• Relatively few employees deciding to leave the organization. Giving a low level of
labour turnover
• Good relationship between managers and other employees
• High levels of labour productivity from the workforce
