MATH 1:

WALT: Subtract 1 digit from a 2 digit

number crossing 10.

- I know that I can exchange 1 ten to make

ten ones.
- I can use my knowledge of number bonds
to help subtract numbers.
- I know what bridging the gap means.
- I know how to exchange when I don’t have
enough ones.
Starter:
Miss Dade wants to work out 23 - 9. She uses a
number line to help her. She makes 9 jumps
backwards on the number line and finds that
her answer is 14.

TTYP - Is this the quickest way to work

out the answer? What did we learn
yesterday to help us?
-6 -3

23 9 14

3 6
23 3 20
20 - 6 = 14
+2 +5

18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25

18 7 25

2 5

20 5 25
This is called bridging the gap. We use our
knowledge of number bonds to help us make
subtracting quicker.

60 4 64
TTYP - What should you do first?
1. I know that I look at the ones
column first.
2. I realise that I cant take 7 from 5.
3. I know that I need to exchange
one ten for ten ones.
I can
now
take 8
away.
TTYP – Have I written this correctly using
the column method?

I have put the

25 numbers in the
wrong place holder. I
-8 need to ensure that I
place my ones in the
ones column.
On your whiteboards can you show how
this calculation should be written using the
column method.

Challenge: Can you work out the answer
