• Discretionary dependency
• These dependencies are defined by the project manager or
the project team.
• They are not critical to the completion of tasks, but they may
be used to make scheduling more efficient.
• For example, you may enter dependencies for a resource
that he or she finishes one task before beginning another.
• Neither task depends on the other so the dependency is
discretionary.
Project Schedule
• External dependencies
• These are dependencies that exist external to your project
schedule.
• For example, you may need to test code in your
organization’s load testing lab.
• If the lab is in the process of being refurbished, your project
will have a dependency on the contractor completing the
refurbishment project before you can start your testing task.
Internal dependencies
• Gantt charts provide a standard format for displaying project schedule information by listing project activities and their corresponding start and finish dates in calendar form.
• Gantt charts are sometimes referred to as bar charts because the activities’ start and end dates are shown as horizontal bars.
• The activities on the Gantt chart are driven by the deliverables on the
• WBS, and should coincide in turn with the activity list and milestone list.
• Gantt charts often do not show dependencies, which is their major disadvantage

• To find the critical path for a project, you must first develop a
good network diagram, which in turn requires a good activity
list based on the WBS.
• Once you create a network diagram, you must also estimate
the duration of each activity to determine the critical path.
• Calculating the critical path involves adding the durations for
all activities on each path through the network diagram.
• The longest path is the critical path.
• Figure 6-8 shows the AOA network diagram for Project X
