Who is Nelson Mandela ?
NELSON MANDELA

 Born in 1918 in a small African village


 Grew up in South Africa during apartheid
 Studied law, opened first black law partnership in 1942
 Became a leader in African National Congress, resisting South Africa’s
apartheid policies
 Sent to prison in 1964; served 27 years.
 In prison Mandela learned to control his temper and strong will, instead
using persuasion and emphasis to convince others
 In 1990 President de Klerk released Mandela
 In 1992, the South African government instituted a new constitution
 Became president of South Africa in 1994
 Received Nobel Peace Prize for his role in abolishing apartheid
 Continues to be an advocate for peace and justice throughout the world
