Citation Analysis and Information

Retrieval.
By waqar ahmed
Introduction:
Information retrieval is based on
principles of matching query terms with
document terms and similarities of their
citation.
Three types or techniques of citation
analysis and information retrieval.
1.Bibliometrics
2.Scientometrics
3.webometrics
Bibliometrics:
The term bibliometrics as a type of
research that uses qualitative and
statistical analysis to describe
properties of documents and
document related process with in a
given field or body of literature.
Scientometrics:
The scientometric is used to objectively
map the scientific knowledge area review
papers or review of book and cover the
result of research concerned with the
qualitative feature and characteristics of
science.
Webometrics :
Digital libraries opened up a new vista
called webometrics
Which involved research in developing
new metrics and techniques to discover
the characteristics of information
resources on the web and digital
libraries.
The example of application of citation
analysis in information retrieval
Web of science of database
Google scholar
Web of science :
Web of science has multidisciplinary
coverage and is a one stop shop
providing access to over 10,000 journals
and 120,000 conference proceedings in
the sciences ,social sciences and art or
Humanities. Three large citation index.
(SCI,SSCI,AHCI)
Google Scholar :
One of the most prominent example of
the use of citation analysis principle
can be seen in the scholar service .just like
the ISI web of knowledge services It
allows users to conduct a search (on a
subject or by an author)and produces
results with links to all the cited items.
Citation indexes:
A citation index is an index of citations
between publications .it allows the users
to establish which later documents cite
earlier documents or how a given
document is cited with other document
over period of time Its show a links b/w
cited documents and source documents.
Main three trends of bibliometrics and citation
analysis:
To improve the quality of results through
improve metrics such as the h-index which is
measure of citation and publication a high
index indicate that author has published a
considerable body of highly cited work.
Conti
To apply bibliometric to an increasing
range of problems such as in the
assessment of research quality at
institutional and national and
international level.
To develop metrics for new tasks for
example information retrieval sport and
visualization of knowledge domains.
Citation index techniques are use to
prepare the lists of
Highly cited papers
Highly cited authors
Highly cited journals and other
publications in given field of study.
