Types of Pharmacies

The Pharmacy and Drug Act permits the registrar to issue licenses to a
clinical pharmacist for the following categories of pharmacies:

 1. Community pharmacy

 2. Compounding and repackaging pharmacy

 3. Mail order pharmacy

 4. Satellite pharmacy

Community Pharmacies

 Traditional pharmacy

 Provide a pharmacy services to patients that come to the pharmacy

 Compound, dispense, provide for sale, or sell drugs to patients in


Alberta

 May deliver drugs to a patient outside of Alberta if the patient


normally attends the pharmacy

 Can exist on it’s own

Compounding & Repackaging Pharmacies

 Compound or repackage drugs for a licensed pharmacy or


institutional pharmacy that will dispense or sell those
drugs
 Written
contracts with each pharmacy to whom they sell
compounded or repackaged drugs
 Can exist alone or in combination with a community
license

Compounding & Repackaging
Pharmacies
 Compounding and repackaging pharmacy cannot dispense
directly to patients unless they also have community
pharmacy license
 May compound medications for other community
pharmacies
 Have a contract that outlines the responsibilities
 Unique identifier on the label that indicates that the
prescription was filled off-site
 Audit trail clearly indicating all staff at that were involved
in compounding or repackaging

Compounding & Repackaging
Pharmacies
 Not a license to manufacture drugs

 Written formula and written preparation process

 Documentation must include information about the individual


ingredients, such as lot number and expiry date

 A beyond-use date or expiry date must be assigned to all


compounded products

 Sterile products such as ophthalmic or IV drugs must be prepared in a


sterile environment

Mail Order Pharmacies

 The licensee of a community pharmacy may also apply for a mail


order pharmacy license

 Community pharmacies may provide mail order pharmacy services to


patients in Alberta

 Provide a pharmacy service to a patient that does not come to the


pharmacy to receive the service

 Issued only to community pharmacies

 Cannot exist alone

 Cannot be added to a compounding and repackaging pharmacy license

Satellite Pharmacies

 The licensee of a community pharmacy may also apply for a satellite


pharmacy license

 Operate a pharmacy at a location remote from the community


pharmacy

 Patients who are expected to attend the satellite pharmacy require


services that cannot be provided in a community pharmacy

 Would include remote locations

 Must operate at a fixed location

Lock and Leave Pharmacy

 Located where the pharmacy does not occupy all of the premises

 Operated for fewer hours than the premises are open

 Must ensure that when the pharmacy is closed, the dispensary and all
drugs are locked up

 Must demonstrate how the pharmacy prevents unauthorized access to


the drugs after hours

 ACP strongly recommends that the pharmacy be equipped with a


separate alarm system

Institutional Pharmacies

 Hospitals, penitentiaries, correctional institutions, nursing


homes
 Institutional Pharmacies are the only exception to license
requirement
 Regulated health care professionals are subject to the
practice requirements of ACP even if they are working
outside of a licensed pharmacy
