Fire proofing and sprayed insulation
1950 -1960
Finishing – dry wall and tile
Why is asbestos an ideal construction material?
WHY IS ASBESTOS AN IDEAL
CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL?
Strengthening
Water and heat resistant
Sound and fire proof
HISTORY OF ASBESTOS
1940’s
Asbestos miner were observed to have conditions similar to coal
miners black lungs
The industry was aware of the damage asbestos exposure was
creating
Before 1978
Asbestos was free for all
You can use asbestos anyway you want
Workers were not using protective gear
HISTORY OF ASBESTOS
1978
HEALTH HAZARD OF ASBESTOS EXPOSURE
Irving J. Selikoff and Cuyler Hammond
Conducted a research describing the risks of asbestos
exposure by monitory 200 people working in asbestos
factories for five years
RESULTED IN CHANGES IN THE ASBESTOS
REGUATIONS
WHY ASBESTOS CAN KILL
Enters though the mouth and nose
Down through the air passage deep into the lungs
Fibers lodge into delicate lung tissue
Immune system cell try to breakdown asbestos but this only results
to the damage and eventual death of the tissue
This results to the formation of scars
Scar tissue continuous to develop over the years even after
exposure to asbestos
Scar tissue develops until lungs stop to work
HEALTH CONDITIONS CAUSED
BY ASBESTOS
ACUTE (Short Term) CHRONIC (Long Term)
Shortness of breath Breathing difficulty Ovarian cancer
Chest or abdominal pain Dry cough Uterine cancer
Irritation of the ski and mucous Broadening and thickening of Laryngeal cancer
membranes the ends of the fingers
Gallbladder cancer
Bluish discoloration of the
skin and mucous membranes Head, neck and throat cancer
Asbestosis Kidney cancer

Lung cancer or mesothelioma Gastrointestinal cancer

WHAT MUST WE DO
Evaluate
Identify possible areas of
asbestos exposure
Areas identified must
contain the following
signs
REMEMBER!
WET method must be used (removal of construction
material with asbestos
Floor and other surfaces contaminated with asbestos must
be vacuumed or cleaned by wet cleaning methods.
HOW TO DEAL WITH ASBESTOS
IN THE WORKPLACE
DEVELOP A TRAINING
PROGRAM
Employer must have a training program for all employees who are exposed to
airborne concentration of asbestos
Training must start before or at the time of initial assignment and at least yearly
thereafter
THE TRAINING PROGRAM
Health risks of asbestos exposure
How to recognize and deal with asbestos
Know were asbestos is located in the workplace
Monitoring of asbestos
Do not disturb asbestos
Read and follow waning signs
