CHAPTER OVERVIEW
o The purpose of this chapter are to provide an
overview of health information technology
(IT) used in contemporary nursing practice
and briefly described the history of clinical
informatics using the culture of healthcare in
the United States as a framework.
 Clinical Informatics – can provide possible
solutions to existing problem in the US
healthcare system including fragmentation,
access to care, and care of the special
populations. Nurses who understand clinical
informatics will likely improve delivery and
patient safety
INFORMATICS IN NURSING PRACTICE
o The role of the 21st nurse is complex,
requiring interaction with multiple medical
devices and health IT.
o Nurses at all levels of education preparation
and in all healthcare settings use technology
every day in practice.
o In addition to becoming expert users, it is
increasingly likely that nurses, because of
their experience in patient care, will be called
on to participate in the design of new clinical
systems for delivering high-quality and
efficient care.
MEDICAL SOFTWARE
o Also known as Health Information
Technology Software.
o A blanket category that includes several
different software types.
o This software helps healthcare providers
manage patients and practices.
o A category of tools used in medical settings
that collect data points on individual patient
health for future reference, long-term study
of behaviors, or short-term diagnoses.
o The tools can be found in all sectors of the
healthcare and medical industries, from
pharmacies and labs to mental health and
physical rehabilitation facilities.
o Any software item or system used within a
medical context, such as:
 Standalone software used for
diagnostic or therapeutic purposes
 Software embedded in a medical
device (often referred to as “medical
device software”)
 Software that acts as an accessory to
a medical device
 Software used in the design,
production, and testing of a medical
device
 Software that provides quality control
management of a medical device.
o Larger practices and hospital systems of all
sizes use multi-tool medical software
solutions that centralize patient and critical
information required to keep the
organization running.
o These tools often include medical records,
charting, billing, supply management, and
resource allocation software.
o They also might include patient portal and
patient engagement software along with
marketing and sales tools that help the
organization deepen relationships with
current patients and grow the business.

technicians, and office workers, and

o Works to organize and analyze data from

medical specializations.
