LAN (Local area network)
A group of devices in a computer network such as computers, severs, switches
and printers. There are normally located in a building or a small area. There are
connected with ethernet cables. An example of a LAN is school or a business.
WAN (Wide area network)
A group of LANs CANs and MANs located in a large geographical area such as a
country. There are connected with Fibre optics or WIFI. An example of a wide area
network is the internet.
WLAN
It’s very similar to a LAN but its connected wirelessly using WIFI instead of using
ethernet cables. They rely on high frequency radio waves, inferred or light An
example of a WLAN is when you connect your phone to a network using WIFI.
PAN (Personal area network)
A PAN is a small network that is normally used to connect 2 devices together such
as using bluetooth, or using a cable. There are normally wireless but you can use
a USB cable to connect 2 devices together. An example of a PAN is connecting
your airpods to your phone using bluetooth.
MAN (Metropolitan area network
A MAN is a network used to connect a city or a district together. A example of a
MAN is a city council connecting all there computers from around a district to a
server. There are connected by copper cables or fibre optics.
SAN (Storage area network
A SAN is a network that is used to access data storage such as a disk array or
tape libraries from servers. An example of a SAN is a google data centre that has
servers with people data. There are connected using fibre optics.
