INTRODUCTION:
According to many management theories, four basic
management functions exist and these are planning,
organising, directing, and controlling. Leadership is
also an essential function in any enterprise.

LEADERSHIP:
Leadership skills allow a manager to influence others
for the realisation of a goal. Further, leaders must
have an eye set on the future and motivate people to
achieve the visions.
• CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP:
Leadership is an interpersonal process where a manager
influences and guides workers for achieving
organisations goal.
A good leader needs to be intelligent, mature and have a
strong personality.
Leadership is a group and needs at least two (or
more)people interacting with each other.
A leader can shape and mold the behaviour of a group in
the direction he wants.
There are no best leadership styles. A good leader
understands that he needs to tackle the situations as
they arise.
BRITANNIA INDUSTRIES LTD:
Britannia industries ltd is an Indian company specialised in
food industry, part of wadia group headed by Nulsi Wadia.
Founded in 1892 and headquartered in Kolkata, it is one of
the India’s oldest existing companies and best known for its
biscuit products. The company sells its brands of biscuit,
bread and dairy throughout India and abroad. Beginning
with the circumstances of its takeover by the wadia group in
the early 1990’s the company has been mired in several
contaversies connected to its management. However, it still
has a large market share and it is profitable.
HISTORY:
The company was established in 1892 by a group of
British businessman with an investment oh Rs. 295.
Biscuits were manufactured in small house in central
Kolkata. The Mumbai factory was set up in 1924.

BUSINESS:
The company’s principal activity is manufacture and
sale of biscuits, bread, rusk, cakes and dairy products.

PERFORMANCE AND PROFITABILITY:
Between 1998 and 2001, the companys sales
grew at a compound annual rate of 16%
against the market, and operating profits
reached 18% . More recently the company has
been growing at 27% a year, comparedto the
industry’s growth rate of 20%. At present 90%
of Britannia’s annual revenue of Rs 22 billion
comes from biscuits.
Britannia is one of India’s 100 most trusted
brands listed in the brand trust report.
Britannia has an estimated market share of
38%.
CONCLUSION:
Growth of Britannia industries was only possible because the
basic function of management like planning, organising , directing
and controlling were carried out effectively.

Hence, leadership is a vital management function that helps to


direct an organisations resources for improved efficiency and the
achievement of goals. Effective leaders provide clarity of purpose,
motivate and guide the organisation to realize the mission.

As a result of it Britannia industries is one of India’s leading food


companies with a 100 year legacy and annual revenues in excess
of Rs. 9000cr.
