Modern technological solutions combined with the power of artificial intelligence and machine
learning are transforming the global transportation industry.
One of the critical components of this tech machine is computer vision. Experts believe that
computer vision in transportation is a necessity that has multi-pronged benefits and applications
across many use cases. The level of success of computer vision is increasingly playing a big role in
changing the status of the transportation industry.

The real time availability of item identity allows other information, related to the item, to be drawn on in order to
assess both the current state of the product and future actions required.
In the context of warehouse management operations, widespread introduction of such systems represents a major
opportunity to overhaul and improve tracking and tracing systems, process control and inventory management.
Auto-ID or automatic identification refers to the identification process of the appropriate stock keeping units (SKU)
during a supply chain process, using technologies such as RFID, barcodes etc. Automatic identification technologies
improve the accuracy of the SKU in very effective manner.
Automatic Identification in product transportation (contd.)
Automatic identification naturally reduces errors while performing certain operations, thus reducing
rework and improving time efficiency.
These technologies also help businesses enforce certain rules such as FIFO, LIFO or a combination of
rules that are absolutely necessary for smooth running of operations.
Some of the areas where Auto-ID finds its application are receiving, binning, picking and packing.
There are several types of basic technologies used for data capture
according to the data type in AIS
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) for printed text recognition.
ICR (Intelligent character recognition) for hand-printed text recognition.
OMR (Optical Mark Recognition.) for marks recognition.
OBR (Optical Braille Recognition) for barcodes recognition.
BCR (Barcode Reader) for bar code recognition.
DLR (Document layer Recognition) for document layer recognition.
Some common Auto-ID technologies in use are
1.
BARCODE
This uses encoding the information of the package in a barcode. When a barcode is attached to a
package, the information of the package travels with it. A two-dimensional bar code carries more
information than a regular bar code.
2.
RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION (RFID)
RFID has a definite advantage over bar codes as they transmit real time information of the position of
the packages. With RFID, there is also a two way communication. Information of a package is
encoded on an RFID tag. The RFID tag constantly emits radio frequency waves that can be captured
by a receiver with a RF antenna. On the downside however, RFID has been employed only by certain
companies due to the high costs of the RFID tags.
3.
BIOMETRICS
Biometric identifiers use the technology of identifying human biological information associated with a
particular package. These include techniques such as fingerprint identification, retina scan, and face
recognition and so on. Biometric identifiers can be used for identification and authentication
purposes. They find wider application in security and human movement related operations.

4. OPTICAL CHARACTER RECOGNITION (OCR)
This technology can be used to electronically translate images of handwritten, text-written or printed text
into machine readable and editable form. For example, they can be used to read and interpret serial
numbers which can be used for matching, tracking or sorting packages as they move through various supply
chain processes. However, OCR technology is yet to improve in terms of accuracy and speed in its
applications.
5.VOICE RECOGNITION
Voice recognition is another important technology used in automatic identification. It is a process where
voice and speech are converted to commands to carry out certain operations. To use voice recognition,
analog voice must be first converted to digital signals and compared with the data already in the database to
carry out a particular command. Like any other technology, this too has a flip side. Any noise apart from the
intended voice signal can alter the command sequence.
Role of Auto-ID technology in Warehouse Management
Warehouse Management is a key area of the entire supply chain. The primary purpose of a WMS is
to control various processes such as identifying the right goods from the point of reception,
identification of proper storage locations, sorting, picking, and shipping of the appropriate goods.
When it comes to a warehouse, there is a huge flow of products in, out and within the warehouse.
WMS uses Auto-ID to effectively monitor this product flow.
In modern times, warehouse management is not limited to a single warehouse anymore. The
inbound, outbound and warehouse processes have implications on production management of a
particular product. Close monitoring of these products can send accurate information to the original
equipment manufacturer (OEM) or even help in accurate forecasting of that product. In its simplest
form, a WMS looks at collecting data of a package or a product, interpreting it and storing it on a
central database which can be either a standalone server in the warehouse or an ERP suite. Here is
an example of how an automatic identification technique can help in effective warehouse
management.
Role of Auto-ID technology in Warehouse Management (contd.)
Barcodes and barcode scanners can capture the data of an incoming part and assign it to the
appropriate storage/picking location. It can also provide you accurate information about the
inventory levels of a particular SKU. RFID systems can help you monitor the flow of products, collect
the data and provide real-time transmission and synchronization to a central warehouse. It can also
help in optimal utilization of the warehouse space and assets as well as improve the efficiency of
warehouse logistics in the areas of receiving, storage, packing and shipping.
Auto-ID helps WMS in achieving the objective of optimizing the cost of order fulfilment in a timely
manner by managing the resources economically.
Benefits of Auto-ID technology
1.They help identify the right goods on time
2.Accurate data capturing helps in accurate forecasting resulting in lesser stock outs.
3.Improved count and visibility of stocks, leading to lower stock shrinkage.
4.Accurate data collection leads to accurate binning and picking.
5.Auto-ID also helps in reducing labour costs.
6.Application of automatic identification processes enforces picking rules such as FIFO, LIFO or
FEFO so that correct goods are delivered to the customer.
7.Accurate information about the package can be obtained without physically opening the
package.
8.Accurate package linking to a delivery order or invoice is possible.
Issues in Product Transport.
1. Problems of Road Transportation in India
According to a report, roads account for 60% of all transportation. In India, road transit is the most common
means of transport. Despite this, problems of road transport in India is increasing drastically day by day
which is faced by transportation firms due to our inadequate road infrastructure, multiple checkpoints, and
congestion. Whether transporting big cargo or fragile items, a well-maintained road infrastructure is
essential to ensure that commodities arrive safely at their final destination.
2. Bad Traffic Management
According to traffic reports generated by the world’s top countries, India is the most populated country and
has plethora of traffic problems and solutions. Due to the growing population of cities, freight vehicles and
travellers alike must spend a significant amount of time stuck in traffic.
One of the major problems in transportation system of India, however, has no exact answer. Engineers,
designers, planners, constructors, and road transportation professionals all offer effective solutions to these
traffic problems.
Issues in Product Transport. (contd.)
3. Parking Problem
Parking is one of the major problems in transportation system of India. As we have seen, there is not
enough space in the centre regions of large cities to accommodate everyone who wants to drive and park.
As a result, parking must be controlled, which is commonly done by prohibiting commuters from parking
all day or making it prohibitively expensive. However, the fines in certain towns are so minimal that
getting caught two or three times is less expensive than paying parking fees.
4. An Increase in Fuel Prices
One of the highly faced problems in transportation in India. In the last six months, crude oil prices have
increased by 23.06 percent. In India, petrol prices have increased by about 50% since January 2010,
prompting automakers to invest in more fuel-efficient vehicles and expand diesel engine capacity, even as
oil marketing corporations hint at further increases.
With rising oil costs and Indian oil marketing corporations intending to raise fuel prices, car owners may
be forced to make some difficult financial decisions.
Issues in Product Transport.(contd.)
5. SPEED AND DELIVERY TIMES
The transportation industry is under tremendous pressure. Companies have to move goods from
point A to point B in the face of unpredictable conditions. However, some of these challenges
can be remedied with automation upgrades capable of improving both speed and efficiency
while contending with staffing challenges and the increasing demand for goods.
The Levvel survey showed that companies are racing to get goods delivered to gain a
competitive advantage while still trying to hold on to legacy systems. A lack of automation in the
transportation industry can make weather and traffic prediction and route planning difficult,
leading to higher fuel costs and a loss of skilled staff. However, companies don’t have to
automate their entire fleets to reap the benefits of automation. Before investing in the
autonomous fleets of the future, there are a series of smaller steps they can take that provide
immediate relief and a satisfactory ROI.
Issues in Product Transport.(contd.)
According to 70% of the companies that participated in the survey, speed and accurate estimated times of delivery (ETD) are
currently their main challenges. The most precious commodity in the transportation industry is time, so it makes sense that
automation tools addressing issues related to time on the road will show the most promise in helping companies achieve
their logistics goals.
But there are challenges to implementing automation tools such as cargo tracking and routing software. Our research found
that the main barriers to meeting speed and prediction requirements are:
•Poor traffic predictions
•Cost of fuel
•Poor weather predictions
•The cost of fleet maintenance
•A lack of skilled drivers
•Poor routing strategies
