What is the definition of change?

Why do we need to change

leadership?

How can we do it ??

When do we start?

Who will do it?

Where we can implement it?

What is the definition of change …
Replace (something) with something else newer or different.

Human life is marked by three stages of change: birth, growth, and death, which happen over
a certain period…. So, change is a mandatory step in our life journey.

A change is a project, initiative or solution being introduced in the organization

Why we need to change
change is a reactive strategy that takes place when

Something isn’t working well Needs to be more advanced

Obligatory process (Governmental, Law or global regulations )

Change is a strategic decision from top management But never solo action.

That means each cell in the organization has to be in the same direction towards the
main goal.
How can we do it ??
Main steps :

Vision for change

(Define and communicate a valid vision )
Purpose of change
(Define the mission or purpose )
Values and goals
(Identify, display and promote shared values that inform and support the vision,
purpose and strategies with all stakeholders )
Strategy for change
(Develop, communicate and implement rational plans that are informed by shared
values)
Empowering people for change
(Empower people to be able to do what needs to be done, when & why)
Engaging people in change
(Influence, motivate and inspire people to want to do what needs to be done)
what are the four major factors in leading change?
Follower:
different people require a different style

Leader:
know yourself as a leader people will decide on their own whether to follow you

Situation:
all are different, use judgment to determine the best course of action

Communication:
two-way, you must set the example
Dispersed leadership for change
 change leaders exist at all levels throughout an organization.

 collective action in leading change is more likely to achieve

successful and sustainable change.

 leading change and managing change are different processes,

but neither is sufficient alone.

 Transformational leadership is a leadership style in which

leaders inspire their teams and employees to work toward a
needed change and guide them to become better
What is the difference between leading a change and managing a change?

change management refers to a set of tools or structures intended to keep

any change effort under control

change leadership: concerns with driving forces, vision and processes that
fuel transformation

Management consists of controlling a set of entities to accomplish a goal

but leadership refers to the ability of an individual to influence, motivate,
and enable others to contribute toward organizational success
Empowering people in change
Effective leaders engage people in the change effort by influencing, motivating and inspiring them to
want to do what needs to be done

Engaging people in a change effort is perhaps the most difficult part of leading organizational change
but is also critical to its success and sustainability,

Engaging people in change

Engagement of followers is the essence of what is known as transformational leadership

Engagement encourages creativity, which can lead to innovation

Managing Change:

1. Be inclusive. In the same way, you should ensure the involvement of yourself and other senior
leaders, be sure you’re also creating opportunities for mid-managers, frontline leaders and
individual contributors to engage.

2. Be clear. Clarify your expectations for new behaviors. Any change requires shifts in behaviours,
and people need to understand the differences between what they were doing before and how
that’s different from what you’re requesting tomorrow. In addition, confirm plans and
communicate regularly.

3. Be proactive. People need different kinds of information at different times. Be intentional and

proactive about providing the right communication at the right times. At the beginning of the
change, provide information that is contextual (the why and the conditions driving the change)
and personal (what’s in it for people)
4. Be educational. One of the primary reasons people resist change is because they worry their
performance will be negatively impacted. Ensure you’re creating the conditions for success and give
people additional training or orientation as necessary.

5. Be measured. Learning and reflection are critical to success, but we can skip them in our rush to
keep things moving forward. Be intentional about reflection by setting up evaluation processes to
measure pre-change and post-change. This kind of measurement can help you demonstrate results and
learn where you’ll need to continuously improve.

6. Be reinforcing. Leading change is not for the faint of heart and it will take endurance. At the same
time you’re communicating a sense of urgency, you’ll also need to be patient as change unfolds. Sustain
change by reinforcing success and celebrating both small steps and big wins.
•Leading change starts with YOU

• Change can be seen as threatening

• To improve we need to change

• As leaders we need to take people with us on the journey

• All the written words before will be translated in a case study to clarify
practically what is the meaning of change ….
