Climate Action Plan

Trevor Blackett
Gardening and animal husbandry
Every year around the end of January, I get the itch. It starts that first day we get a
reprieve from the cold. It’s a sunny day and the temperature is mildly warm for
winter. I look out into the garden and see the chickens scratching about looking for
bugs to eat. While looking about I've got one thing on my mind, my Garden. I start
looking at a few of my favorite websites to see what new varieties of plants they
have acquired since last year. I know the time is coming to start planting and
getting out in the sunshine to raise this year’s crop of veggies and eggs to enjoy.
Organizations/Causes I looked into:
1. SLC Sustainability
a. https://www.slc.gov/sustainability/
b. The Salt Lake City Sustainability Department aims to achieve a Zero Waste SLC while
delivering refuse service responsibly and efficiently.
2. Plant Based Utah
a. https://www.plantbasedutah.org/
b. Plant Based Utah is a collaborative of passionate professionals, clinicians, health scientists,
and other motivated women and men working to educate the people of Utah about the
importance of a whole food, plant-based lifestyle.
3. Utah Recycling Alliance
a. https://utahrecyclingalliance.org/
b. The Utah Recycling Alliance empowers people, organizations and communities statewide to
create a Zero Waste culture by building successful models and encouraging practices that
promote reuse, recycling and resource conservation.
PLANT BASED UTAH
I chose to complete my Climate Action with name of organization. I chose this
organization because I like to grow a lot of my own food. I also believe we need to
transtition to a mostly plant based diet. The mass raising of animals is doing quite
a lot of damage to the earth.
My Message(s)
● I want to teach my family about the woes of mass animal raising.

● I want to raise awareness of the damage done to our bodies by ingesting all
the processed food.
● I want more people to grow their own food if possible.
● I want to show people that raising backyard chickens is quite simple and easy
to do.
My Audience(s)
My family first, if I can change them, I can get through to more people.

● Your social media community

● Colleagues at work
● People where you live

My friends on social media will see the outcome of the garden. The folks I work
with will have to hear all about it daily from me. A large portion of my neighbors
already garden and raise chickens however, there are still others out there to
learn.
My Communication Methods
Updates throughout the week/month on social media and word of mouth.

● Posting pictures
● Giving away eggs
● Giving away fresh produce

The pictures will get people thinking about it but when they taste the freshness of
the produce and eggs, they will see how much better they are compared to store
bought.
Topics I need to Research
● Water usage.
● Harmful chemicals often used to increase the crop yield.
● The transmission of avian diseases carried around by the wild birds.
Connection to General Ed Learning Outcomes
Students express themselves creatively. This includes engaging in the creative
process to produce unique artwork, designs, or performances; analyzing, interpreting, and critiquing
creative works; and producing a unique and professional General Education ePortfolio.

Students communicate effectively. This includes developing critical literacies—reading,

writing, speaking, listening, visual understanding—that they can apply in various contexts; organizing and
presenting ideas and information orally, visually, and in writing for various purposes and audiences;
understanding and using the elements of effective communication in interpersonal, small group, and
mass settings.
