SPEECH STYLES: INTIMATE,

CASUAL AND CONSULTATIVE

SPEECH STYLE

• is the way in which something is said, done, expressed or


performed and it corresponds to specific speech context
• This speech styles-intimate, casual and consultative-
generally occur in interpersonal context
A. INTIMATE

• A non-public speech style that uses private vocabularyand includes


nonverbal messages.
• A conversation that takes place between persons of close alliances or
relationship
• It is the style in which meaning is shared even “without correct
linguistic forms”
• This occurs among people who have known each other for a
long time and have shared many experiences
• Because they know each other well, they can sometimes
complete each other’s sentences and know what the other
person is thinking even before they open their mouths
• Even without the correct linguistic form, people using the
intimate style understand each other
• terms of endearment and terms that show respect are often used
• Therefore, private or sensitive matters are usually talked about
• Terms of endearment:
mahal/babe/bhe – husband and wife
• Terms that show respect
mom/dad/kuya/ate

• Family members
B. CASUAL CONVERSATION

• Used among friends and acquaintances that do not require


background information
• The used of slang is common and interruptions occur often
• Used when there are no social barriers to consider
• When you talk your classmates, peers, and other people who
are not as close to you as your family members or are not in
your innermost circle of family and bestfriend
• The language used is often informal and conversational
• Terms of endearment are rarely used in this style
• Takes place between classmates, friends or coworkers
C. CONSULTATIVE

• To consult is to ask or seek advice from a person, usually a


professional who has an expertise on a specific subject or
field
• Takes place between professionals such as between doctors
and their patients or between lawyers and their clients
• You use the consultative style of
Speech when talking to a doctor,
Lawyer, engineer, counselor and
Other professionals who you think
Can help with your need for
Information, advice or opinion
• Requires more formality in terms
Of language, manner of speaking,
And gestures
