EXPERIMENT NO. 05
SHAPE TEST (ELONGATION INDEX)
The aim of this laboratory test is to determine:
• the elongation index of a given aggregates sample
E.I: The elongation index of aggregate sample is the percentage by
weight of particles whose greatest dimension (length) is greater
than 1 and 4/5 times (1.8 times) their mean dimensions. The
elongation index test is not applicable to sizes smaller than 6.3
mm.
APPARATUS
• Length gauge
• I.S. Sieves of sizes 63, 50, 40, 25, 20, 16, 12.5, 10 and 6.3 mm
• Balance

EXPERIMENT NO. 05
THEORY AND SCOPE
The particle shape of aggregate is determined by the percentages of flaky and
elongated particles contained in it. Flakiness and Elongation tests are conducted on
coarse aggregates to assess the shape of aggregates.
Aggregates which are flaky or elongated are unfavorable to the higher workability
and stability of mixes.
Flaky and elongated particles are not suitable for good interlocking and hence the
mixes with an excess of such particles are difficult to compact to the required
degree.
It is determined according to the procedure laid down in IS-2386 (PART- I).

EXPERIMENT NO. 05
THEORY AND SCOPE

For base coarse and construction of bituminous and cement concrete types,
the presence of flaky and elongated particles are considered undesirable as
they may cause inherent weakness with probabilities of breaking down under
heavy loads.

Rounded aggregates are preferred in cement concrete road construction as

the workability of concrete improves.

EXPERIMENT NO. 05
PROCEDURE
1. The aggregate sample is sieved using sieve set as mentioned in
the test apparatus.
2. The sample is divided into various fraction based on variation in their sizes
and weighted as W1, W2, W3,…..Wn while performing sieve analysis.
3. In order to separate elongated materials, each fraction is
gaugedfor maximum length, on length gauge.
4. Then the amount of elongated material retained on the length
gauge is weighted using balance.
5. Weights of aggregate retained on the length gauge of all the fractions is
recorded as w1, w2, w3, …..wn.
