TABLE TENNIS
Table Tennis
• a common sport that could be played indoors and outdoors.

• can be played in singles or doubles.

• Singles and doubles table tennis differ due to differences in rules.

• most commonly known as Ping-Pong.

INTRODUCTION
Objective of the Game

• game objective is to hit the ball by a racket and return it to the opponent
over the net.

• the ball must hit the table only once, is not allowed to bounce balls in the
air, as it is in tennis. Points are awarded for hitting, which the opponent does
not answer.

• Singles table tennis is played to 11 points, whereas doubles are played to

either 15 or 21 points.

INTRODUCTION
Table Tennis

• The true origin of Table Tennis is largely unkown, although forms of the
sport has been documented as early as the late 1800s in England.
• The first game would have been played using champagne cork as a ball,
cigar boxes as bats , and books for the net.
• The game was invented in the late 1880s when game makers tried to
emulate the popularity of lawn tennis by developing indoor versions of it.

BRIEF HISTORY
Table Tennis

• It was known as Indoor Tennis, Gossima, Whiff-Whaff, and Ping-Pong

because the early versions of the game were made by several different
manufacturer and each manufacturer used an exclusive patented or
trademarked name for their own version.

BRIEF HISTORY
Table Tennis
• Around 1898 the English sports company John Jaques & Son were
manufacturing the first table tennis sets and popularising the game.
Later they named the game "Ping-Pong", derived from the sound made
by the ball when it hits the racket and table.

• Table tennis competition has been in the Summer Olympic Games

since 1988, with singles and doubles events for men and women.

BRIEF HISTORY
Table Tennis

• The sport started becoming popular around the world in the early 1900s.
During this time, the official name of the sport was changed form Ping-
Pong to Table Tennis. This was due to the copyrights conflict with Parker
Brothers, who owned the rights to the name and game Ping-Pong. They
decided that they would only allow their trademarked name to be used if
their brand of equipment was specified exclusively.

BRIEF HISTORY
Table Tennis

• Therefore, an alternative name was required for the sport so since that
time and particularly since the establishment of the International Table
Tennis Federation (ITTF) in 1926, the modern game has been known
as Table Tennis.

BRIEF HISTORY
Table Tennis

• Although many people use the names Ping Pong and Table Tennis
interchangeably, Ping Pong remains a registered trademark and brand
of equipment, whilst the official name for the sport since 1926 is Table
Tennis.

BRIEF HISTORY
Table Tennis

• The International Table Tennis Federation and United States Table

Tennis Association (later changed to United States Association of
Table Tennis are the organizations that would go on to become the
primary ruling bodies of Table Tennis.

BRIEF HISTORY
FACILITIES &
EQUIPMENTS 12

TABLE TENNIS
FACILITIES
Compared to most other sports, the
minimum size requirements for playing 13

table tennis are relatively small. Therefore

the game can be played almost anywhere.

TABLE TENNIS
FACILITIES
• Ideally, table tennis should be played in a dedicated space with
appropriate facilities permanently available. However, that's not always
possible.

• Often the sport is made to put up with sub-standard facilities such as

poor lighting, unsuitable floor covering or inappropriate wall colouring.

• Main factor in determining what table tennis room size will be needed
is the standard/level of competition being played.
FACILITIES
• Table tennis as well as being fully organized is also extremely popular
as a recreational game and is so played in all types of sports clubs,
social clubs, and game rooms, in the home, and even outdoors when
conditions are reasonably calm.

• Table tennis is generally played indoors, it can also be played outdoors.

However, to play table tennis outdoors, you'll need the right type of
table and the right weather conditions
FACILITIES
• The light is different. Indoor games are illuminated both during the day
and at night; while outdoor games are played by natural light during the
day and can hardly be played at night unless there is a particularly
bright light.

• The flow of air is different. There is no wind playing indoors so the

table tennis is stable; However while playing outdoors, the wind is
inevitable therefore the table tennis is unpredictable.
EQUIPMENTS
You only need four main pieces of
equipment for table tennis. A table, the 17
net, a ball, and the two rackets or paddles.
There are a number of accessories you can
purchase, too, but these four items are the
essentials.

TABLE TENNIS
TABLE
• ITTF indicates that an official ping pong table must be a rectangle 2.74 meters
long and 1.525 meters wide, which is about 9 x 5 feet per table painted green,
blue or black (dark and non reflecting). The tabletop must be 76 cm above the
floor and must be placed entirely on a flat surface. The table can be made of any
material resulting in a 23 cm high bounce whenever a standard table tennis ball is
dropped from the height of 30 cm.

• Sidelines and endlines are white and should be 2cm wide. The centerline is also
white but only 3mm wide.
Difference between outdoor and indoor Table Tennis
Tables

• The most notable difference is the material used to make the table tennis
top. Indoor one is solid wood, while outdoor one is a mixture of wood
and metal, and is finished with a coating to resist the harsh sun, rain, and
dust.

• Outdoor tables tend to have sturdier frames and can be placed indoor,
but vice versa is going to damage your table.
INDOOR
TABLE
OUTDOOR
TABLE
NET
• A net shall run horizontally across the entire 1.525 meters width of the
table, which divides the table into two, equally long ( 1,37 meters length
).

• The top of the net is 15.25 cm above the playing surface.

• Height: 15.25 cm or 6”

• Length: 183 cm or 6ft

• Post length: 15.25 cm or 6” outside the table

BALL

• Small, made of plastic or celluloid, and must be white or orange

with a matte finish. Fragile but quite hard to break unless stepped
on.

• The official weight of a ping pong ball should be- theoretically –

2.7 grams. In reality, the acceptable range is from 2.6 to 2.77 grams
per ball.
BALL

• An official table tennis ball used in competition has a diameter of 40

mm. However, during the manufacturing process, there may be some
variations leading to the diameter change, which means that the
acceptable range for the diameter of a ping-pong ball is between 40 and
40.5 mm.

• The choice of a ball’s color is made based on the table color and its
surroundings.
RACKET
• Although called by many names such as racket, paddle, or bat. The official Laws
of Table Tennis refers to it as a table tennis racket.

• Depending on your playstyle, a racket or paddle can vary in size and weight, but
the official rules state that the blade must be flat and rigid, and strictly made of at
least 85% natural wood.

• Its standard size is 15cm (6 inches) across and 25 cm (10 inches) long including
the handle.
