INTRODUCTION

• Concrete is a composite material composed of fine and coarse aggregate bonded together
with a fluid cement that hardens overtime.

• Concrete is the second-most-used substance in the world after water, and is the most
widely used building material.

• The cement industries is one of the main producers of carbon dioxide and green house
gases.

• It can cause harm to the most fertile layer of the earth, the top soil

• In the recent revision of IS : 456-2000, discussed use of concrete unavoidable at the same
time the scarcity of aggregates and cement are also greatly increased nowadays.

• Hence construction industries under pressure in finding out alternative material for
replacement of cement to reduce the cost of concrete.
SOURCE OF MOTIVATION

• The wish and rising cost of construction in developing countries have been a source to
government and private developers.

• To solve the issues related to Co2 global emission and waste material disposal problem.

• Use of readily available local materials such as agricultural waste material as an

alternative to minimize the cost.

• This study investigated the use of eggshell powder and coconut shell ash as replacement
for cement in M20 grade concrete.
EGG SHELL POWDER

Figure 1 Eggshell powder

• Eggshell is made almost entirely calcium carbonates (CaCo3) crystals in it.

• The egg shell consists of three basic layers: a lipoidal inner layer, a chitinous middle
layer, and outer layer of protein.

• About 1.61 million tones of egg shells are generated manually, which makes the
India a fifth largest country in the world.
EGG SHELL POWDER

• The quality of lime in egg shell waste is influenced greatly by the extent exposure to
sunlight, raw water and harsh weather conditions.

• It is the fine grained powder with suitable proportion which is sieved to the required
size before use with concrete mortar.

COCONUT SHELL ASH

Figure 2 Coconut shell ash

• Coconut shell ash is agricultural waste.

• From the reports India produced 1.11 million tones of coconut in the year of 2014.
• Coconut shells have better durability characteristics, high toughness and abrasion
resistant property.
• Coconut shells are collected and burnt in the open air for three hours to produce
coconut shell ash which in turn used as pozzolana in partial replacement of cement
in concrete production.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Amarnath Yerramala studied the properties of concrete with eggshell powder as cement
replacement. Different ESP concretes were developed by replacing 5-15% of ESP for cement.
The results indicated that ESP can successfully be used as partial replacement of cement in
concrete production. The test was conducted on 150mm cube specimens at 1,7 and 28 days.
Compressive strength was higher than control concrete for 5% ESP replacement at 7 days and
28 days of curing ages. ESP replacement greater than 10% had lower strength than control
concrete.

D Gowsika (2014) experimentally investigated the eggshell powder with partial replacement
for ordinary Portland cement in cement mortar. The cement mortar of mix proportion 1:3 in
which cement is partially replaced with ESP as 5-30% by weight of cement. There was a sharp
decrease in compressive strength beyond 5% ESP substitution. The admixtures are used to
enhance the strength of the concrete mix with 5% eggshell powder as partial replacement.

Jayasankar (2018) has investigated the experiment by partially replacing cement with Fly ash
and eggshell powder. They had conducted the experiment with varying percentage in M20,
M25 and M30 concrete. Based on results obtained it can be concluded that Fly ash and ESP
mixed cubes has equal strength with that of conventional concrete cubes in certain categories.
LITERATURE REVIEW

Karthik has conducted the experiment by partially replacing of fine aggregates by eggshell.
Here they had replaced the ESP up to 10-50%. They concluded that the tensile strength,
flexural strength was decreased with increasing in ESP percent.

Manzoor Ahmad Allie (2018) had made an attempt to study the possibilities of using
eggshell powder in paver block. Cement was partially replaced at 5% intervals from 0% to
25%. The paver block curing process is done for 7 days and 28 days. After curing it was
noted that 13.4% increase of compressive strength at 10% replacement. Flexural strength
also increased at the same 10% replacement.

Rasayan J.Chem (2017) weight of cement along with the eggshell powder results increase
in compressive strength. Since the addition of silica fumes doesn’t make any broad changes
to the concrete strength, flexural and spilt tensile tests are performed with the plain eggshell
mix only.
LITERATURE REVIEW

Bhaskar U.M (2019) replaced partially coarse aggregate with coconut shell at different
percentages. In this study M20 and M25 grade concrete was used and various combinations
of coconut shell of about 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% were prepared. The results shows that the
normal aggregate can be replaced with coconut shell aggregates but the performance of
coconut shell concrete is little bit lower than the conventional concrete. With the increase in
replacement of coconut shell the voids in the concrete is also increases.

Shaik.Aliimran Tippu, & Vr.Prashanth Kumar (2015) have conducted spilt tensile
strength and compressive strength characteristics with complete replacement of coarse
combination with coconut shell to supply light-weight concrete and to exchange cement by
exploitation silica fume admixtures with completely different percentages to urge smart
strength like standard concrete.

INFERENCE FROM PREVIOUS LITERATURE

• Most of the studies concentrated on partial replacement of cement with egg shell
powder, fly ash, rice husk ash, egg shell powder powder with silica flumes.

• Most of the studies shows that compressive strength of the concrete is increased
than the conventional concrete at certain percentage of the additives.

• In some studies compressive strength of the concrete is decreased with the addition
of excessive amount of the additives.
REASEARCH GAPS IDENTIFIED

• By using eggshell powder in M30 grade concrete, the workability of concrete

reduces and beyond addition of eggshell powder of 10% drastically decreases the
compressive strength.

• Research can be made with the addition of super plasticizers such that the
workability of the concrete increases.

• Research can be made with an increase in percentage of eggshell powder being

added to concrete for higher grade grades of concrete so as to test its properties.

• Research can be carried out to see other calcium based elements as a option for
replacement of cement in concrete.

• Only limited studies concentrated on egg shell powder and coconut shell ash as a
partial replacement of cement.
GAPS CONSIDERED IN YOUR STUDY

The experimental investigation is planned under

• To obtain the mix proportions of control concrete by IS method.

• To conduct compression test on cube and control concrete on standard IS specimen,

size 150*150*150 mm.

• To conduct the spilt tensile strength of concrete made with partial replacement of
cement with eggshell powder and coconut shell ash.

• To conduct the tests on cement, fine aggregates and coarse aggregates.

• Ordinary Portland cement of 53 grade is used for this experimental study.

• IS method is used for mix design and M20 grade of concrete with mix proportion of
1:1.5:3.
OBJECTIVES

• Developing the mix design for concrete relevant to IS: 456-2000.

• To study the strength properties of the concrete of grade M20.

• To study the influence of partial replacement of cement with egg shell powder and
coconut shell ash to compare it with compressive strength of M20 concrete.

• To determine percentage of coconut shell ash and egg shell powder replacement in
concrete that makes the strength of concrete maximum.
