CONCORD / AGREEMENT

 Concord is such agreement between subject (noun) and verb or


auxiliary of a sentence
Concord or agreement :
1. If subject has two noun connected with preposition (such as of, in / on, at
__ etc). So the verb can be plural or singular based on “noun” in front of
preposition it self
Example :
 Different interpretations on the same event by various newspapers
make readers confused and angry.
 A period of eight hours is not enough to finish this assignment.

2. If subject has two noun followed by “together with, accompanied by as


well as, along with” can be followed by verb either plural or singular
depend on subject before
Example :
 The minister together with the wives and children attends the
meeting.
 The ministers together with the wives and children attend the
meeting.
3. a) If the subject ; the number of + noun (plural)  verb (singular)
Example : - The number of students does the exam
b) If the subject : a number of + noun (plural)  verb (plural)
Example : - A number of students do the exam

4. If the subject such as everyone, everybody, somebody, someone,


something, no one / none, nothing, no body, anyone, anybody, anything
followed by verb (singular) but pronoun (plural)
Example :
 Even/one likes her. They are happy.
 Nobody knows their faults.

5. If the subject such as each of, each, every, neither / neither of, one of,
ether / either of  verb (singular)
Example :
 Each of students studies hard.
6. If the subject is distance, time, money, volume, weight etc  verb
(singular)
Example :
 One hundred dollars is expensive for this hat.
 Two hours is not enough to do the test.
7. If the subject such as shoes, trousers, glasses, socks, scissors  verb
(plural)
Example : His glasses are nice.
8. If the subject is “Gerund” or abstract noun  verb (singular)
Example : Swimming is her hobby
9. If the subject is “book title, story, film, etc”  verb (singular)
Example : Romeo and Juliet is a good story.

10. If the subject such as “billiards, dominos, cards  verb (singular)


Example : Billiards is an interesting game.
11. Collective noun can be followed by verb (singular) or verb (plural)
Example :
 The staff is slim. It is composed of five members, (refers to the
organization)
 The staff are strong. They are always ready to join the competition,
(refers to the members)
12. – Either subject (1) – or – subject (2)  verb (singular / plural)
– Neither subject (1) – nor – subject (2)  verb (singular / plural)
– Subject (1) – or – subject (2)  verb (singular / plural)
Example :
 Neither Novi nor Vivi is going to class today.
 Either Novi or Vivi is going to the beach today.
 Neither Novi nor her friends are going to class today.
 Either Novi or /ns classmates are going to the beach today.
 Novi or Vivi is going to class today.
 Novi or her friends are going to class today.
13. Conjunction “and” connected with other words must be the same form
Example :
 Debby enjoys playing on the beach and swimming in Die ocean.
 I know Dean as a loyal employee and a hard worker.

14. If the subject is “uncountable noun”  verb (singular)


Example :
 The meat has a lot of fat.
 The news of Sapti's marriage is surprising many boys
15. If the subject is science (such as mathematics, physics, mechanics,
statistic,
Example :
 Economics is a social science.
 Politics has become a favorite subject.
