When you're learning a new language, a
cognate is an easy word to remember
because it looks and means the same thing
as a word you already know. For this
reason, recognising cognates in written
form is very easy.
Though these words look alike and have
the same meaning, the pronunciation is
often very different.
This can make it difficult to spot them

Around 10,000 words have been
borrowed into English from French.
