Cognates are words that have the same or similar meaning and spelling in different languages. While cognates look alike in written form, their pronunciation is often different, making them difficult to identify when listening. There are over 1700 "true cognates" between English and French - words that have the same meaning and pronunciation in both languages. Examples of true cognate word pairs provided are bouquet/bouquet, chef/chef, addition/addition, etc. False cognates, also called "false friends," look similar but have different meanings.

?
When you're learning a new language, a
cognate is an easy word to remember
because it looks and means the same thing
as a word you already know. For this
reason, recognising cognates in written
form is very easy.
Though these words look alike and have
the same meaning, the pronunciation is
often very different.
This can make it difficult to spot them
while listening. “Intelligent”.
Around 10,000 words have been
borrowed into English from French.
