COGNATES
Cognates are words of the same or
similar nature, related by descent from the
same ancestral language (Merriam
Websters Dictionary).
That is to say, words that look and mean
the same (or almost the same) in English
and, in our case, in Spanish due to their
Latin root.
Examples,
actor, animal, capital, chocolate, etc.
Activity: Read the text Defining
Psychology again and underline/make
a list of cognates you find.
FALSE COGNATES
However, there exist several words
despite being the same in both
languages, their meaning is different.
They are also called FALSE FRIENDS.
Careful!!! Youll have to learn them
by heart.
Examples,

SIMPLE PRESENT
Hints to recognize simple present
tense.

- Read the title and caption.
- Quickly take a look at the cognates
- Find clues to establish the tense the text is written.

That way youll have a clear idea of what the text


is about.
