Old Testament Theology: Word Study Instructions

Procedure for Word Study:

1. Look up the selected word in the concordance: Young's Analytical Concordance to the Bible
or Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible.
2. Use the classification scheme of your concordance to isolate the individual word. The same
English word may be used to translate several different words in the original language, so make
sure you have the right word.
3. Make a list of the word in it's contexts.
4. Study the contexts for clues to meaning.
1. Look for definitions of explanations associated with the word
2. Look for other words, either synonyms or antonyms, that may occur frequently with the
selected word.
3. If your word is a verb, look for what kind of object it takes.
4. If your word is a noun, determine whether is it a person, thing, abstract, event, etc.
5. Regroup or organized the list of references according to the observations.
6. Find clear passages to illustrate the observed senses of the word.
7. Consult other sources to check your conclusions.
