USING KEYS 17.

Biology grade 8
:CHANGING IDEAS

 We use keys to identify animals or

plants in an easier way
Numbered key

ASKING
QUESTIONS ?? Branching key

• Keys ask questions to

eliminate choices until only
one species is left
• The questions need to be
about features that don’t
change as the organism gets
older
• Keys are easier to construct is
both genders have the same
features, but some male and
female look very different
DESIGNING
KEYS

• To design a key, we need to

use subtle differences to
separate the animals in each
group
• We need to use FACTS and
not opinions
• Ask questions such as “ are
its ears round?” and not
“Does it look strong?”
because some people have
different opinions
USING EXTRA EVIDENCE

CLOSELY RELATED SPECIES CAN LOOK VERY DIFFERENT, AND

UNRELATED SPECIES CAN LOOK VERY SIMILAR
ONE FEATURE THAT LIONS AND LEOPARDS
SHARE IS THAT THEY ARE BIGGER THAN OTHER CAT SPECIES ARE SMALLER, AND THEY
PURR
OTHER CAT SPECIES AND THEY ROAR
It has hollow fangs, a heart shaped head, and 18 to 22 V shaped strips.

A is another Bitis species because it has hollow fangs and a heart shaped head but a different
pattern; C is another venomous viper because it has hollow fangs, but its head is not heart
shaped.
