Acknowledgment

This book arose from a series of studies, online articles, blogs, and books.

The world is already vast in terms of information, and I am grateful to our

instructor for allowing us to teach and share my views about animals.

I created this book based on their materials, which I find helpful, instructive,

and easy to understand for the readers.

The External Parts and Function of Animals is a book covering what it has

to learn about animals and their importance to humans. This book is beneficial

for students who have difficulty in understanding animals and I am confident

that it will serve as a bridge for them.

Most importantly, I'd like to express my gratitude to everyone who has

helped me along the way, particularly my family, friends, and classmates. Those

who continue to push me to achieve my highest potential. Without them, I

would not be where I am today. And it gives me great pleasure to think that I

will be able to write this useful book that I will be able to share with everybody

Curriculum Vitae 16
Preface

Producers must be able to describe animals and use the information in

selecting and examining animals and in providing health care. The descriptions

are based on the external parts of the animals. The presence of various qualities

in the external parts indicates the value, health, and condition of an animal. This

means that animal producers not only know the names of the parts but they

also know the qualities that should be evident upon visual examination of the

parts. Qualities vary with the species and the way the species is used. For

example, cattle raised for beef have qualities that vary from those raised for

dairy production. A considerable study is needed to learn the qualities that

indicate the desired characteristics of animals.

This module will help you explore the key concepts on topics that will

help you understand the general concepts and answer the questions pertaining

to The External Parts and Functions of Animals and their Importance to Humans.

The topics have five major sections, namely, Engage, Explore,

Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. Each section represents the different phases of

the learning process.

1
Topic: External Parts and Functions of Animals and

Their Importance to Humans

Intended Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify the external parts and function of animals and their importance to

humans.

2. Label the external parts of animals through critical thinking.

3. Illustrate the external parts of animals according to what is ask from the

activity.

Introduction

Do you have pets inside your home? Maybe a cat or dog? They are such

warm and lovely animals. They love to be fed and cuddled. Other homes have

pets’ birds while others take care of fishes, turtles, and guinea pigs.

How about the zoo? Have you ever been to one? The zoo is home to a lot

of animals from playful monkeys, to proud lions, colorful peacocks, and quiet

crocodiles. They came from the wild but were saved and taken care of by

humans. Other animals that come from the wild are snakes, wolves, and foxes.

2
They live and roam free in the forests. But remember that they are wild,

meaning it would be dangerous for us to approach them on our own because

they are not used to seeing and being touched by us, humans.

There are also animals on the farm! Have you ever been to a farm? They have

animals like chickens, ducks, cows, bees, and pigs. This is where our foods

come from. Eggs come from the chickens while milk comes from the cows. Bees

give us some of their sweet honey while bacon comes from pigs. Our world is

filled with many animals. Some look different while other looks the same, but we

will learn what they have all in common.

EXPLAIN
Animals are also known as Metazoa are multicellular eukaryotic

organisms that belong to the Animalia kingdom of biology. Animals, with a few

exceptions, ingest organic matter, breathe oxygen, can move, reproduce

sexually, and go through an ontogenetic stage during embryonic development in

which their body consists of a hollow sphere of cells called the blastula.

External parts of an animal are any part on the outside of it. Some

examples include tails, legs, claws, skin and beaks. Animals use these parts to

help them survive.

Animals can have different numbers of legs.

Spiders have 8 legs, while insects have 6. Many animals have 4 legs such

as dogs, cows, lions and bears. Animals use their legs to move, climb and jump.

Animals can have claws that help them to survive.

Animal claws can be used for a variety of things. Some animals use claws

to dig for food, like the armadillo. Others use claws to dig homes or even to

defend themselves.

Animals use their tails for specific purposes.

Monkeys use their tails to hang from trees. The tail keeps their hands

free so they can get food or swing from branch to branch. Many different kinds

of animals have tails.

Animal coverings are also external parts.

Some animals have feathers, like birds, to help them fly. Other animals

have fur, like a polar bear. The fur keeps them warm. Some animals, like

humans, have skin that is soft.

Animal coverings serve a specific purpose.

A crab has a hard shell to protect its body. Zebras have patterns on their

fur to blend in with other zebras and avoid predators. Frogs use their skin to

help them breathe.

Body Parts

Like people, we have three main parts namely the head, trunk, and limbs. This

is also the same as animals. All animals have heads.

Head

Snakes have heads. But unlike

humans and other animals, they

don’t have ears that stick out

because theirs are hidden. They

don’t have hair either.

Lions have heads too. Like humans, they have

hair. They are called manes. Both the snake and

the lion have eyes, noses and mouths.

Horn

Some animals have horns. These are

the hard pointy things on the top of

their heads. Animals that have horns

are carabao, goats, moose, and rhinos. They use their horns to defend
themselves from other animals and to hunt for food.

Trunk

All animals have trunks. The snake has a long

trunk. The lion has a strong trunk.

Limbs

Not all animals have limbs. Some

do, some don’t. The snake does

not have limbs. The lion has four

limbs. But instead of hands, they

have paws. But if you look closely, you can see that your dogs and cats also

have paws.

How about birds?

They have heads but have beaks for mouths.

They also have four limbs. But instead of arms

and hands or paws, they have wings instead.

They use them for flying. They have legs and

feet so they can land on tree branches when they need to come down from the

sky and rest.

How about Fish?

Pet goldfish has a head and a

trunk, but it only has 3 limbs.

Instead of arms or heads, they

have fins to help them swim. Instead of two legs or feet, they have one big tail.

This helps them move and swim in the water.

Octopuses, on the other hand, have a head and

trunk but have 8 limbs. These are called tentacles.

They use them to move around the sea and to

catch their food.

Animals have external body parts that help them move, eat and protect

themselves. Each body part has its own specific functions.

The Functions of Animals’ body parts

1. For Movement

Animals move from one place to another. They use different body parts to walk,

jump, run, crawl, swim or fly.

10

Some animals use their limbs and feet to move. Dogs, tigers, horses, pigs,

giraffes, and cats have one pair of forelimbs and one pair of hind limbs.

Ducks have webbed feet that enable them to waddle in water.

Some animals crawl. Snakes, snail, and worm use their bodies to move while

millipedes and centipedes use their short legs.

Birds, bats, and most insects use their wings to fly. They also have feet for

walking.

Turtles and frogs use their webbed feet to move on land and swim in the water.

Fishes use fins, while whales and dolphins use their flippers.

2. For Getting Food

Animals have body parts that suit the type of foods they eat. Dogs, cats, lions,

and tigers have sharp teeth for cutting and tearing the meat of other animals.
Birds have beaks or bills to pick seeds and grains and catch small insects.

11

3. For Protection

Animals need to protect themselves. This is one way of adapting to and

surviving in their environment.

Horns for carabao antlers on deer and tusk on elephants use for defense

mechanisms.

Dogs, lions, and snakes use their fangs to fight off predators.

Some animals use their body covering. Bears have thick fur to protect their skin

from hot and cold temperatures.

Fishes have slipping scales, crabs use their pincers or claws to catch other

animals for food. The shell protects the soft bellies of turtles, snails, crabs, and

clams.

Why are Animals important to humans?

Are body parts of animals are same as humans?

What do animals use their legs for?

What are some different coverings of animals?

What are some useful functions of animal coverings?
