Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 3

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the Grade 3 pupils can:
a. classify animals according to their body parts
b. differentiate vertebrates from invertebrates
c. identify the five classes of vertebrates and their characteristics
d. appreciate the importance of learning what are the vertebrates and their
classifications

Teacher’s Activity Pupils Activity

A. Introduction
1. Setting of Standards
 Listen attentively
 Sit properly
 Don’t talk with your seatmates
 Raise your right hand if you want to
answer
2. Review
What is a habitat? The place where an animal lives

What makes an animal having a particular Because of their habitat

form of their bodies?

Let’s move on to our next topic.

3. Motivation
This time I will show you pictures of different
kind of animals. I want you to identify each
picture of animals.

What animal is this? Shark

This one? Goldfish

How about this one? Milkfish

What animal is this? Frog

This one? Salamander

How about this one? Crocodile

This animal? Snake

What about this animal? Turtle

This animal? Chicken

What about this animal? Kangaroo

This animal? Platypus

B. Presentation
Animals are classified into two big groups. They are
Invertebrates and Vertebrates.

Invertebrates are animals without backbones.

What animal do you think that does not have a Insects
backbone?

These animals are all classified as Vertebrates.

Vertebrates are animals that have backbones or
spinal cord.

There are five groups of vertebrates.

So in the pictures, what have you observed in the They are all kinds of fish
first set of animals?
Where do fishes live? In the water

Gold fish, shark and milkfish belong to the group of

fish. Fish are the largest group of vertebrates. They
have gills in order to breathe oxygen in water. They
reproduce by laying eggs. They are cold-blooded
animals, meaning their body temperature adapts to
the temperature of their habitat.

In the next set of animals, what have you observed? They eat insects
Does the frog can live in land and in water? Yes teacher
What have you observed in the skin of the frog? Slimy

Frogs and salamanders belong to the group of

amphibians. Amphibians can live on land and in
water. They can take oxygen in two ways: either
through the lungs or through the skin. They are also
cold-blooded animals. Amphibians have different
body covering or skin.

What have you observed in the 3rd set of animals? Wild animals, cannot be pet
What have you observe in turtle and crocodile’s Rough
skin?
What are the characteristics of crocodile? They eat meat and looking for prey

Crocodile, snakes, and turtles belong to the group of

reptiles. Reptiles are covered with scales and hard
bony plates. Their skin is dry and cool. They are also
cold-blooded animals like the fish and amphibians.
Reptiles move at various speeds they live in hot, dry
and warm, wet tropical forests.

In the next set of pictures, what have you observed? They are all kinds of birds
What do the birds use to keep them warm? Feathers

Chicken, ostrich and duck belong to the group of

birds. Birds are warm-blooded animals meaning
their body temperature does not change in any kind
of weather. All birds have a pair of wings but some
cannot fly and they also have two legs for walking.

How about the last set of pictures, what have you They have four legs and have fur
observed?
Do they lay their young by laying eggs? No, teacher.

Dogs, kangaroo and duck-billed platypus belong to

the group of mammals. Mammals are the most
highly developed among the group of vertebrates.
They are covered with hair and fur. They have
mammary gland that secretes milk and are also
warm-blooded animals.

Mammals are grouped into three groups according

to the way in which individuals develop the fertilized
eggs:
1. Placentals: the embryo receives nutrients snd
oxygen from the mother’s body through an
organ called placenta.
2. Marsupials: they have pouches where their
young complete their development
3. Monotremes: egg-laying mammals.

C. Comparison and Abstraction

Where do you think humans belong? Mammals
Is shark a mammal? No, teacher. A fish.
Is frog a fish? No, teacher. An amphibian.
Is snake an amphibian? No, teacher. A reptile.
Is duck-billed platypus a reptile? No, teacher. A mammal.
Is duck a bird? Yes, teacher.

D. Generalization
Do you think without backbones we can still stand? No, teacher.

What will happen to the bodies of the animals They will have different body shape.
without backbones?

E. Application

Now we will have an activity. I will group you into 5

groups. Each group will choose one representative
and go to the front to choose the best answer.
Members will help the representative to choose the
answer.
Identify each vertebrate’s major classifications.

Vertebrates Legs Habitat(Land/Water) Skin Group Vertebrates Legs

1 Dog 1 Dog Yes
2 Crocodile 2 Crocodile Yes
3 Ostrich 3 Ostrich Yes
4 Frog 4 Frog Yes
5 Shark 5 Shark No

4. Evaluation

Instruction: Write the name of the animals, the vertebrate group they belong and the animal’s
characteristics (live in water, live in land, moist skin, feathers, scales, have legs, swims, walk or crawl) in
the space provided.
