What is the method of multiplying
and dividing radical expressions?
The method of dividing rational expressions is the same as the
m e t h o d o f d i v i d i n g f r a c t i o n s . To d i v i d e a r a t i o n a l e x p r e s s i o n b y
another rational expression, multiply the first rational
expressions by the reciprocal of the second rational expression.
For all rational expressions a/b And c/d with
b ≠ 0, c ≠ 0, and d ≠ 0

a/b • c/d= a/b • d/c= ad/bc

Example:
Divide and Simplify:

X² - 4/X + 6 • X + 2/ 2x+6

Write as multiplication by the reciprocal:

The reciprocal of x + 2/2x+6 is 2x+12/x+2

x²-4/x+6 • x+2/ 2x+2=x ²-4/x+6 • 2x+12/x+2

Now mul tiply the numerators and the denaminators:

(x²-4)(2x+12)/(x+6)(x+2)
Factor the terms in the numerator:

(x+2)(x-2) •2(x+6)/(x+6)(x+2)

Divide out the common factors:

(X+2)(X-2)•2 (x+6)/(x+6)(x+2)

Simplify:

2(x-2)/1

2x -4
Remember

To obtain an equivalent expression you must multiply the numerator and denaminator by the exact
same none zero factor.
