• Invention: The origin of
surfing takes place in
western Polynesia
three thousand years
ago. The first surfers
were fishermen, who
discovered that using a
wooden board to catch
the waves was a very
efficient method to
return to shore with
their prey.
• History: There is evidence
of the presence of surfing
for more than 500 years
on the islands of
Polynesia. The English
explorer James Cook
arrived in Hawaii in 1778,
where he met
Bodysurfing (similar to
this sport but without a
board) and Bodyboarding.
• Symbol: The "shaka
sign," also known as
"hang loose," is a
typical greeting gesture
that is often associated
with Hawaii and surf
culture. It is done by
extending the thumb
and little finger while
the other fingers remain
curved, raising the hand
as if to say hello.
• Creator: Duke Kahanamoku
Duke Kahanamoku, became
the father of modern surfing
and evangelizer of sport
thanks to his sporting and
social feats. Duke
Kahanamoku, born in
Honolulu, Hawaii on August
24, 1890, was considered the
father and inventor of modern
surfing.
