About Surfing
▪ Surfing is a surface water sport in witch the participant, referred to
as a „surfer“, rides a surfboard on the forward face of a wave, witch
is most often carrying the surfer towards shore.
▪ Surfers usually surf in the Ocean but also done in wave pools
History
▪ The art of surfing, called he‘enalu in the Hawaiin language, was first described in
1769 by Joseph Banks on the HMS Endeavour during the first voyage of Captain
James Cook. Surfing was a central part of ancient Polynesian culture and
predates European contact . Hawaiin people integrated surfing into their culture
and made surfing more of an art than anything else.
Surf culture
▪ It carries a lifestyle that it made for itself over 50 years ago
▪ Well known terms:
 Shaka sign (‚hang loose‘)
 Beach bunnies, don‘t surf
 Volkswagen van, ‚surf-mobile‘
 Fashion brands like o‘neil and billabong
 Paddle outs

▪ Aspects of 1960s surf culture in Southern California, where it was first popularized, include
the woodie,  bikinis and other beach wear, such as boardshorts or baggies, and surf
music. Surfers developed the skateboard to be able to "surf" on land
The Giunesses Book of World
▪ The Giunesses Book of World recognized a 90 foot wave ride filmed by ESPN as
the largest wave ever surfed.
Famous surfers
▪ Robert Kelly Slater, born in 1972, Florida. Won 11 times the World
Championships.
▪ Margo Oberg, born in 1953, Pennsylvania. First female professional surfer in the
world. She won the first professional surf contest in 1975.
▪ John Florence born in 1992, Hawaii. Became popular because he was the
youngest surfer ever to compete in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

was a Kanaka Maoli competition
swimmer, who is widely credited
with popularizing the ancient
Hawaiinan sport of surfing

 The surfboard is the important piece of equipment that you‘ll need.

2. Wetsiuts
 If you want to surf all year round and the water temperature is too
cold for boardshorts, then you‘ll need a wetsuit

3. Leashes
 The surfboard leash is used to attach your board to your leg.

▪ The average surfing lesson costs between $25 to $100 depending on the
popularity of the lessons and where you live. 
▪ Surfing lessons that run one to two hours cost between $10 and $20 in small
areas. In larger areas, you may pay between $20 to $70 per hour.
