DEFINITIONS

• Misconduct: Refers to behaviours that deviates/departs from


the accepted patterns of behavior.
•Professional misconduct: Refers to any behaviour on the part
of teachers that deviates from an approved or expected pattern.
Actions of an educator that do not conform with professional
code of ethics and conduct constitute to professional
misconduct.

• Teacher: Is a trained and qualified person who


is certified and authorized to provide
educational instruction to students.
• Profession: In context of teaching, refers to a
vocational occupational into which its
members possesses skills and knowledge
acquired through extensive training for the
Prevalence of Teacher’s Professional
Misconduct
• In context of teaching profession, teacher’s
professional misconduct seems to be the
global concern (Ndibalema, 2013). Several
studies such as (Anangisye & Barrett, 2005;
Andrews, 2009; Green, 2010; Ndibalema,
2013) have acknowledged a wide spread of
professional misconduct among teachers
nearly to all levels of educational institutions
worldwide.

• Teacher’s professional misconduct takes


different forms ranging from verbal, physical to
fiscal abuse of public resources (Anangisye &
Barrett, 2005). This signalizes that teachers have
failed to live up to the highest moral standards of
the teaching profession (Anangisye, 2005).

• In other words, teachers are found living and


performing their duties contrary to the
standards of the teaching profession. For
instance, educational official faced a number
of disciplinary cases related to teacher’s sexual
misconduct with pupils, fraud, drug and
alcohol, and theft of teaching and learning

• Absenteeism has also been found to be a


problem among teachers. When teachers are
absent, it can seriously disrupt the educational
process. Classroom instruction is disrupted,
and students can miss out on important
learning opportunities.

• The problem of incompetence has been
reported to be common. Some teachers go in
classes to teach without having enough
preparation something which is against
professionalism.
Sources of Teachers Professional Misconduct

• Poor management practices of schools such as


lack of frequent visits to schools by education
officers may led to teacher’s professional
misconduct such as lack of commitment and
accountability and lack of adherence to
professional code of ethics and conduct of the
teaching profession.

•Absence of a close supervision and


management of schools provides a room for
teachers sometimes to exercise their duties
contrary to the standards of teaching profession.
•Overloaded subjects/periods may also lead to
professional misconduct among teachers

•Low level of teacher’s motivation such as better
salaries and houses.
