MATHEMATICS INTO
PROFESSIONS
SPACE SCIENTIST
All the science and engineering that goes into designing, building and flying spacecraft is
based on math. Without math, there would be no way to predict beforehand how the spacecraft
would react to different conditions and how it would move in its orbit.
Math Required:
College Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus I, II, and III, Ordinary Differential Equations, Linear Algebra
When Math is Used:
Astronauts use math in order to make precise mathematical calculations, from how the spacecraft leaves
Earth's atmosphere to how the astronauts pilot the craft. Designers use math to calculate distance, speed,
velocity, and their own safety when creating space-faring vehicles.
 The most common use of calculus in Astronomy and Physics is to find
the rate at which the position of a moving body changes over time. For
example, in order for a rocket to be sent into space or a satellite into
orbit, astronomers must use calculus to figure out how much fuel the
rocket or satellite needs to accelerate to the correct velocity to break
through the atmosphere.
 Geometry is used in astronomy to determine the properties of stars
and other objects in space. It is developed to be a practical guide in
measuring the velocity, area, volume and length of heavenly bodies.
Astronomy is the study of these objects, and geometry assists in
figuring out their scope and placement in the firmament. It is necessary to accurately calculate the variable
 Trigonometry is used to measure the distance to stars in the solar speed of moving objects in space, including
system, and the motion of nearby stars compared to more distant asteroids, comets and other celestial bodies.
stars. The method of measuring distance in space is called Many of today's most interesting astronomical
trigonometric parallax insights were gained with the use of calculus.
PHYSICIST
Math and physics are two closely connected fields. For physicists, math is a tool used to
answer questions. For example, Newton invented calculus to help describe motion.
It is not necessary to to be a mathematical genius to study physics, but you do need to know
the basics, and college physics classes often use calculus and algebra.
 Mathematics is the primary tool used by physicists to construct models, make measurements and make predictions. Frequently, physicists
also get degrees in mathematics to help them better understand the subtleties that would otherwise remain hidden in advanced physics.
 Physicists use algebra, calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, group theory, topology and more to unveil the mechanisms that
occur on sub-atomic scales, relativistic scales and everyday scales.
Geometry and Trigonometry
An object's properties, such as its area or volume, can affect the way it interacts with the environment. For example, Main topics required-
knowing how to determine basic properties of geometric shapes can help deduce conclusions relevant to physics. •Multivariable calculus
Calculus •Differential equations
Calculus will helps to solve many physics equations. start with single variable calculus, then progress to multivariable •Linear algebra
calculus. The latter is extremely relevant to physics because the work is with directional derivatives and similar concepts in •statistics
three-dimensional space. Required to solve complex physics equations, and the mathematical thinking exercised learn in
calculus can help train the mind to think like a physicist.
Probability and Statistics
Probability and statistics play key roles in quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics teaches that matter and energy are
both particles and waves, and make predictions about an object's behavior based on this knowledge. This type of physics
examines physical phenomena that occur on the micro level, and relies on probabilistic formulas to draw conclusions about
tiny particles.
Differential Equations
Differential equations are the cornerstone of many famous physics theories. To understand differential equations, we need a
basic background in calculus to solve equations such as the harmonic oscillator equation .
