MEASURE OF

VARIABILITY
REPORTER : CHINEY BEE BARQUIN
 A measure of variability usually accompanies a measure of
central tendency as basic descriptive statistics for a set of scores
 The Goal for Variability is to obtain a measure of how spread out
the scores are in a distribution.
 WHY MEASURE OF VARIABILITY IMPORTANT?
• Measure of variability is important because it provide a measure
of how accurate any individual score or sample represents the
entire population .
THE MOST COMMON MEASURE OF
DISPERSION OR VARIABILITY OF SCORES ARE
THE FOLLOWING:

 Range
 Quartile deviation / interquartile range
 Mean absolute deviation
 Standard deviation
 Variance
THE RANGE
 The range is the simplest measure of dispersion
 It simply measure the distance given by the highest
score and the lowest score.
 It is consider as the least satisfactory measure of
dispersion because it does not tell anything about the
score between the two extremes.
RANGE FORMULA
PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT COURSE TEST
R= Hs – Ls 34
Where : 49
R = Range 25

Hs = Highest Score 20
19
Ls = Lowest Score

SOLUTION :
R = Hs – Ls
= 49 – 19
= 30
QUANTILE DEVIATIONS
■ The Quartile Deviation (QD) is the product of half of the difference between the upper
and. lower quartile distribution .
■ STEPS IN DETERMINING THE INQUARTILE RANGE FROM RAW SCORES.
1. Determine Q1 and Q3 from the raw scores
2. Subtract the Q1 from Q3 the difference is the inquartile range
FORMULA :
Interquartile range = Q3 – Q1
Quartile Deviation = Q3 - Q1
2
Q1 = N+1
4
= 7+1 = 8 = 2
4 4

Q3 = 3( N+1 )
4
= 3 ( 7+1 ) = 3X8 = 24 = 6

THE MEAN ABSOLUTE VALUE
DEVIATION
■ This is referred to as the average deviation. This measures the
absolute dispersion that is affected by every individual score.
It is mean of the absolute deviations of the individual scores
from the mean of all the scores . this is no longer used widely
in statistical work because it is already replaced by the
standard deviation which is more reliable.
 STEPS IN DETERMINING THE MEAN ABSOLUTE VALUE DEVIATION

1. Compute the mean

2. Subtract the mean from individual score to get the deviation.
3. Get the summation of the absolute value of data obtain in number 2.
4. The data obtained in number 3 is divided by the n. The result is the mean absolute
deviation.

FOR EXAMPLE :
STANDARD DEVIATION
• It is consider a special form of measure of dispersion that involves
all the individual values of the items in the distribution rather
than through extreme scores
• It is important as a measure of heterogeneity or unevenness
within a set of observation. Increasing in value as the distribution
of scores becomes more heterogeneous. This is the only measure
of variability of score used in inferences.
STANDARD DEVIATION
■ STEPS IN DETERMINING THE
STANDARD DEVIATION
1. Compute the mean
2. Get the deviations from the mean of the class
marks.
3. Square the deviation from the mean
4. Multiply the squared deviation by their
corresponding class frequencies.
5. Get the sum of the squared deviations.
FOR EXAMPLE :
VARIANCE
• Important measure of variation
• Shows variation about the mean
• Used to compare two or more groups
• WHY IS A VARIANCE IMPORTANT?
• Variance is a statistical figure that determines the average
distance of a set of variables from the average value in that set. It
is used to provide insight into the spread of a set of data, mainly
through its role in calculating standard deviation.
HOW TO CALCULATE VARIANCE
COMPARING THE SET A
AND B VARIANCE
■Therefore the data on the set B or at the
right side is higher than the data on the
Set A or at the left side and the reason for
that is the data on the right side is spread
out on the mean than the data on the left.
