What is Bias in writing?
• Bias in writing can be defined as:
• A prejudice against something an author is writing
about.
• An author letting feelings or emotions cloud his/her
objectivity with regard to something he/she is
writing.
Much of what you read and hear expresses a bias. Bias
is when a writer or
speaker uses a selection of facts, choice of words, and
quality and tone of
description, to convey a particular feeling or attitude.
This is where tone and
mood are at play.

What is tone?

Tone simply refers to how the author feels


towards the subject, or towards something.
Tone
The way a writer make use of tone can tell you a
lot about the writer’s attitude or relationship
toward their subject matter and what they are
trying to say about it, as well as the effect they
are trying to create for their reader.
MOOD

Mood is the feeling you get while reading a story.


This could be happiness, sadness, darkness, anger,
suspicion, loneliness, or even excitement.
It can be thought of as atmosphere or overall feeling
of a piece of writing or literature.
